Gavin Harrison here!

Hello Gavin, I notice in older videos your hi-hats were closer together when open compared to now where they look very far apart.

1) What motivated you to have the hats spread so far apart now?

2) Did you have specific measurements for distance and if so, what were/are they? I’m guessing older video is an inch apart and now looks like several inches.

As always, I appreciate your feedback on this forum!

I have always had them quite wide apart - I use the left foot to play the hi hat in all kinds of situations - plus I really like to splash them loud. If they are only half an inch apart there are things that I can't play loud enough with the cymbals via my foot.

Not really - on the older picture - you might not be seeing the bottom cymbal angled away from me. Or maybe I hadn't really set them up for performance. I think that was from a sound check - and maybe that was how my drum tech set them up on the day.

Hi Gavin! I have been following you for years and I am elated that we ll meet at September - B.G Drum Camp. I wanted to thank you for making this camp and as a master designer /artist it would be absolutely invaluable:

- If we could spend the day where you elaborate on your design philosophies—how you create parts from scratch in a flow state over something from the ground up, distill your best ideas in real-time, and explain the "why" aspect your choices to enhance the track's overall beauty.

This way maybe we could experience your concept of Level 1,2,3 & 4 in person at the camp.

Thank you!

Hi Gavin,

I'm very excited about the new TPT release and seeing you live soon! A couple times you mentioned the possibility of new sheet music from the band's materials, is it still in the works? Please say yes. :)

I have a few questions about the 12" Protean snare, which I love. I believe you used it on the latest Porcupine Tree album, but could you mention any songs (from any band) where the two snares can be heard side-by-side? And how about recordings where you only played the 12"? You wrote earlier that you use the steel wires, medium ring and have it pitched higher (than the 14"), but do you tune it any differently if it's by itself? Thanks,

Dora

Not in the works right at this moment - but it's something we're seriously considering.

Yes I used both of them with Porcupine Tree. You can hear it on Chimera's Wreck (about 7:30) where I switch to the 12" snare drum.
and also on Harridan (around 4:50) I play the smaller snare. So in fact you can hear both there.

And how about recordings where you only played the 12"? You wrote earlier that you use the steel wires, medium ring and have it pitched higher (than the 14"), but do you tune it any differently if it's by itself?
I certainly play it on the last two songs of my Drumeo appearance. In fact I play both the 14" and the 12" at some points during that whole video.
I don't think I tune it any different other than higher than the 14"
here's another one with the 12" drum -

cheers

Wow, thanks! There's something so unique about their sound that's present in both that it feels like they're the same. If I'm not trying hard to listen to the pitch, I can barely notice the transition between the two. Thanks for the videos!

Hey Gavin, very hyped for my third TPT show in NYC! Regarding your bells, I remember you saying you would make them from the bells of broken crashes and I was wondering if you ever made bells from broken hi-hats or ride cymbals? If so notice any major differences in their tones compared to crash bells?
