Gavin Harrison here!

Nah, I play German grip with my thumb on the side.. I guess the more pertinent question is, what is considered an acceptable amount of pain/ physical stress, with the goal of living to 100 and not having to stop playing due to injuries!

That's a good question - and I don't know the answer - but if I get to 100 years old and can still play without pain - I'll let you know ! :)

I have made recordings in that big room and they sounded good - but I prefer the control I have of playing in a dry room. Plus it's actually harder to play in a really ambient space.

I had the walls 'dry lined' - so there is a lot of rock-wool behind the plasterboard now - and there is an under-floor heating system. It was neccasary because of the heating (more than the extra sound isolation) - although I guess that helps reduce the noise that escapes outside the building.

I tried every polar pattern setting on the AKG C12s and the one I liked is almost totally cardioid. I never change the setting for different situations or songs.

Not that I have encountered, I just follow whatever sounds best to my ears. I never really liked the traditional positioning of overheads.

I can't say I've had that particular problem. Do you play with your thumb on top of the stick (like French grip) ?

I have had 'tennis-elbow' problems - and there have been times where I have had blisters until I have developed calluses. There have been some painful times on stage !

Thanks Gavin!

Hi Gavin,

I have a rather big question.

I recently changed my drum kit and got a Yamaha Stage Custom from the early 2000s.

Even though the toms are suspended, I'm having trouble tuning them.

I keep getting a tom sound that is choked. Do you have any methods or tricks I can use to get the best sound?

I hope you can help me. Thanks.

Enea Sergi

I just spent the last few days trawling this thread and learning a lot from the excellent discussions here, so thank you so much for giving back to us all and sharing some of your knowledge. And for the love of drumming jesus please tour to Aus again :)

I'm loving the new Antoine Farfard record!! It makes me think of Virgil Donati's "The Dawn of Time" record, did you ever hear that Gavin?

Hi Gavin

Do you remember which hi-hats were used in the record "Your wilderness" from the Pineapple Thief? I've been reading on the forum and I saw that through the years you used K Custom Session 14, K Sweet (14 or 15?), and K Constantinople hi-hats. Still, I couldn't figure out which ones were used in that particular record. I'm currently in the process of buying new hi-hats and really enjoyed 'Your Wilderness' hi-hat sound.

Also are there any plans of adding another Pineapple Thief show in Latin America besides the Mexico show?

I don't know it - but I'll check it out. Thanks !

Yes it was a hybrid of an old 14" K Zildjian Istanbul top cymbal (1960's) and a Zildjian K Constantinople bottom cymbal (2010). I got the old one from eBay many years ago and I tried pairing it with all the other 14" hi hat cymbals that I have - and when it came together with that particular K Constantinople - a bit of magic appeared to my ears!

We are playing a festival show in Santiago Chile CL. Rock Fest on November 10th 2024.

Gavin,

I happened to notice on “The Frost” the fill at 5:31 is different between Spotify and Apple Music Dolby Atmos versions. Was this intentional, necessary, etc.

I normally listen to Spotify so it caught me off guard to hear the difference in the fill when I heard the Apple Music version.

Wow - well spotted. I haven't actually heard the Apple Music version - but I did ask Bruce Soord (the person who mixed it) and it turns out to be a small mistake. Basically - when I recorded the song it was 8 bars longer - and at a later stage we decided to shorten the end. So he edited the drums in that section - and obviously did a slightly different edit when he did the Dolby Atmos version. He tells me that he's going to fix it !

Ah! I rather like the fill on the Apple Music version. But I get it, for the sake of consistency. Maybe I’ll give Bruce a hard time about it at Meet and Greet in November. All in good fun of course.

Cheers mate

Hi Gavin!

How are you? I hope you're having a good holiday.

I'm looking for a solution to mount the mics for the Toms using the rack.

I noticed that you use the ends of the mic stands with a small tube/hook that you then attach to the clamp. Is this an existing product? Or did you build it yourself?

In the past you also had small microphone stands.

Where can I find them?

Warm greetings, or rather... Fresh greetings! 😁😂

They are Gibraltar SC-GMBA Mic arms. I might have cut them down a bit.

The mic holders are AKG H85 suspension mounts:

They are mounted via a Sonor clamp of course. I like all the mics to have some suspension/ isolation for a cleaner recording without any bangs or shocks going into the mics.
