Gavin Harrison here!

Finally, a question about something I noticed while watching it. On Anesthetize, just before the guitar solo begins you reach your left foot up and it looks like you may be adjusting something, but it's really hard to tell. Do you recall what you were doing here?
Spoiler alert!
Until Gavin answers, please look at page 364, post no. 7267 :)

It’s great to hear the new PT live album with your drums panned from your perspective. It always weirds me out to hear drums panned audience perspective.
I know what you mean - it makes me feel dizzy hearing it from the audience perspective. Plus there are many shots from behind the drums

I really hope there are plans in coming to the US once the European tour is over.
We are working on it !

yes as I mentioned before - turning on the snares ! Easy to do with that Sonor drum - close to impossible with others snare drums !

cheers

Again, late to the party but my BluRay of Nothing But The Truth arrived today. My only complaint is that I can’t swap the drum and main cams. Haha

Gavin, do you happen to remember what hihats you used for the session? Apologies if you’ve answered this previously.

Hello Gavin, on the PT tour could you please tell me

A) Diameters and depths of the 3 side toms by the 12” snare you added for songs like “Harridan”

B) batter and resonant heads on those

Thanks! NY and Boston were fantastic! And Sony Hall with The Pineapple Thief was too!

I believe they were the Zildjian 14" K Session hi hats
A) Diameters and depths of the 3 side toms by the 12” snare you added for songs like “Harridan”
The three toms are 8", 10" and 12" and they are all 7" deep
B) batter and resonant heads on those
Remo black dot heads on the tops and clear Ambassadors on the bottoms.

Cheers
Gavin

That’s pretty interesting. I would never have thought to pan a drum set from drummer perspective. I’m going to have to try that when I get moved and can record again.

Never entrust them to someone else ! I mix them myself as I know very well how I played them.

Cheers

Hej Gavin,

really enjoy the new Live-CD and think your mix of the drums sounds great. Just one question: What reverb do you tend to use for your snare and toms? I'm experimenting a little bit with different reverbs at the moment and don't think I found the right one for me.

By the way: The only drum-sound-thing I was missing on the CD was the impact of the tom-hits in Chimeras Wreck after the bass starts. When I heard you play that in Berlin that was very prominent and loud and heavy; it's also very heavy on the studio recording with lots of room-tone. On the live CD it feels a little underwhelming. Still: It's one of the best songs in that concert!

Cheers

Hi Gavin!

Longtime fan here, not a drummer but I really enjoy reading stuff like this here.

I would like to bring a matter to your attention (and the rest of the band/management/whoever's responsible).

When you announced the latest live release, for us fans there were two options of ordering the deluxe versions: Townsend records (as the official artist store) and Burning Shed.

I went and ordered the deluxe CD/BR package from Townsend. As the days passed after the release and people closer to the UK started receiving their packages, they complained about discs being dislocated from their pockets and being badly scratched.

I received mine today, and I was saddened to have all four discs dislocated and scratched to various degrees.

I contacted Townsend about this to ask about replacement discs (which, seeing from online forums such as Steve Hoffman forums, were sent by the non-official store - Burning Shed - to the customers complaining), but I got a negative reply that they don't have any stock, so they will be sending a refund.

Of course, as you understand this does not solve the problem that we so badly wanted the deluxe version to have and enjoy but we don't get anything from it.

So what I would like to ask (and sorry for taking up your precious time) is if the band/record company is aware of this situation and if they're planning to do some replacement program (for the discs only) in an official capacity.

Thank you.

Hello again Gavin, always appreciate your responses! On this video at 4:36 you seem to be clamping something to the snare stand, what is that?

Mostly I use my real live room that is in front of my drumset - but sometimes I also add a bit of the Logic Pro 'Space Designer' with an old preset called ' 1.1s Nice Wood Room'

that's one of the problems with mixing drums from a live recording - I don't have a room sound that I can compress (like I do in my studio) which can make the drums sound very heavy! Of course there is the room we're performing in - but it's miles too big, has 14,000 people in it, all the other instruments, and a loud PA !
So what I would like to ask (and sorry for taking up your precious time) is if the band/record company is aware of this situation and if they're planning to do some replacement program (for the discs only) in an official capacity.
Sorry to hear of your problems. I didn't know anything about that issue - nor did I design the packaging of course. The management and record company are now aware and plans will be put into place.

It's a Sonor clamp that I use to mount a mic under the snare drum. It's just an easy way - with less clutter. I just use a cut off piece of mic stand to attach it to the clamp.

Hi Gavin. Appreciate your time and amazing answers here to topics us drummers are fundamentally interested in!
Been lately very philosophic about life in general and what I actually spend my time with.
Therefore I would love to know what a typical day of you at home (on tour is probably very tied to the tour schedule) looks like. You might know these "A day in the life of ..." videos. If you want, maybe give a list, like so:
4:30 - wake up to the sound of the Ocean (or the Thames?)
5:00 - my butler hands me my 1.000 pound breakfast
10:00 - 10 to 20 minutes of fooling around on the drums
10:20 till 24:00 - YouTube
or something like that. ;)

Hej Gavin,
thanks for your answers! "1.1s Nice Wood Room" sounds promising... I think reverb is just there to lengthen a snare-sound if necessary or to give it a "bigger space". Using a real room-tone for this kind of thing is of course ideal. I sometimes use a room mic, compress it and gate it, triggered by the actual snare, so it is only heard whenever the snare is hit.

As for the livesound: I can just imagine that you had to deal with a lot of difficulties when mixing this. It sounds great!

Cheers

We all had C/C Live on our Santa's Letters but what do you have on yours, Gavin??
World peace - and that every musician plays in time !

there isn't really a typical day. I try not to get up before 9:30 if I can - and then at some point I go into my studio to work on whatever it is I have to do. It could be rehearsing for an upcoming tour - or general practise - a writing session - a recording session - a mixing session (or a combination of any of those things). Some days I don't even touch the drums ! I usually stop by 7pm.

Hey everyone
Hey Gavin !
Happy Christmas to everyone

what an honour to discover this forum to speak with u … I’m a really huge fan about you, your drum playing and also your gears …! Love my both protean !

I might turn out to be ridiculous and boring, but my dream was to get the Sonor Sq2 in blue tribal and this time come true today !

Gavin, i would like to know what setup you used with the blue tribal sonor sq2, i mean,
i think it’s your classic 8 10 12 15 18 22 in maple
but which thickness ?

Is your configuration was :
8 thin or vintage maple
10 thin or vintage maple
12 thin or vintage maple
15 medium maple
18 medium maple
22 heavy maple

Also, will you use the same thickness today for you drum ?

thanks a lot for your answer

On my Blue Tribal SQ2 - all the toms and floor toms are 'medium' shell. The bass drum is 'heavy' shell.
My 'Yellow Stripe' SQ2 is exactly the same thickness as the Blue Tribal.

Hi Gavin, I'm psyched about this thread existing and spent the last three days just browsing and looking at some questions and answers you gave. Interesting Stuff!

I've got 3 questions for you:

1. I know your style is heavily built on improvisation, where you usually keep the integral grooves the same, but change fills and subtleties to your taste. My question is, are there any fills, that are so iconic/integral/important to you, that you play them every night pretty much unchanged?

2. My second question is the opposite. Are there any grooves that over the years have fundamentally changed, so much that they no longer resemble the original part of the recording?

3. Lastly, I recently heard your piece "19 Days" and I loved it. The drums sound so musical and melodic, and I get a very strong emotional reaction from it. Do you have any other pieces in a similar style? or any recommendations for other artists in that genre?

Thanks ahead!

Yes if I feel that the fill is really important to the composition of the song - and that everyone is going to expect it at that moment.
2. My second question is the opposite. Are there any grooves that over the years have fundamentally changed, so much that they no longer resemble the original part of the recording?
Not that I can think of - unless it was a complete rearrangement of the song

I don't have any other pieces really similar - you might like the records I did with O5Ric or maybe a record I made called "Cheating The Polygraph". Have a listen to "Hells Bells" on a Bill Bruford album called "One Of A Kind" it was written by Dave Stewart (who also wrote "19 Days").

cheers
Gavin
