How did you cut the hole in the resonant head of the bass drum in the first kit so cleanly?
By cheating! How did you cut the hole in the resonant head of the bass drum in the first kit so cleanly?
Phil a bad mood. And a hell of a nice man. What a wonderful inspiration. Great job!.I'm pretty excited about my newest project and wanted to share.
I've been a huge Phil Collins fan for well over 30 years, but I've never really put too much though into actually having a kit like Phil's. But this year I finally decided to go ahead and put together a set like his.
I know Phil never played a full Ludwig kit, but I've always loved their drums and decided that would be my own spin on the project. That Ludwig concert toms are plentiful also helped convince me. But with that detail I suppose it isn't really a replica kit as much as a tribute kit. No matter, it's a blast to play.
Even though his setup didn't change too much from 1981 on, I decided (at least for now) to try to replicate the specific kit he used in 1981 on his first solo album Face Value, and the Genesis albums Abacab and Three Sides Live. It really just boils down to cymbal placement, but having that big swish right up front is a lot of fun!
Compared to what I was replicating:
So my latest project is to set up something more like Chester Thompson's kit too, and since I (just barely) had the room I figured why not have Phil and Chester's kits side by side!

All that’s left for you to do is record a duet with yourself playing on both kits a la Los Endos. So my latest project is to set up something more like Chester Thompson's kit too, and since I (just barely) had the room I figured why not have Phil and Chester's kits side by side!
...Or maybe Duke's Intro...All that’s left for you to do is record a duet with yourself playing on both kits a la Los Endos.
Thanks! That's a serious drum collection you've got there. Jaw dropping, really.
Yes. The Rocker lugs are notorious for being prone to breaking. I replaced most all of the lugs with Large Classic lugs since they have the same hole spacing and are much more robust. Unfortunately the Rocker bass drum lug has a completely unique hole spacing so I just have to baby them and hope my stock of spare lugs will hold out.Only the bass drums and some stacked on the left side look like they have Rocker lugs.
Did you replace some of the lugs on the other drums?
Simply fantastic. So my latest project is to set up something more like Chester Thompson's kit too, and since I (just barely) had the room I figured why not have Phil and Chester's kits side by side!
Please notice I don't have a shitty old Slingerland throne like Phil used...Just make sure you dont play it like Phil and end up with the serious back trouble he now has to put up with.
