Felt vs plastic

I like a punchy defined sound with a low end thump and wide spread for my bass drum sound. I like the attack of the plastic side of my beater but I wonder if I can get great definition and attack that will cut through a loud band using the felt side of my beater?

The room that I am practicing in is a storage room made of metal so when I hit the kick it's hard for me to tell how things sound.

Just to say, I'm playing with a Mapex Falcon double pedal which has a beater with a pretty hard felt side.

best suggestion is to try it. Might want to have another drum come over and play the kit for you so you can stand out front and listen. The room will have a huge affect on how your kit sounds. I'm guessing your kit isn't mic'd?
