Today, we tried a new reso head on my new DW Smoke Glass Contrails kit. I received this kit with a factory white semi ported remo head. Now, me personally, I am an EVANS drum head guy.. but I thought I would do a three point comparison. 1) Factory Semi Ported head with the mic set to center2) EVANS EQ3 with the mic set to center3) EVANS EQ3 with the mic set to the center of kickportLet me know what you think of the three setups and which you like best?!

But maybe you should be an Evans drum head guy that uses Remo reso heads... ;)

In all seriousness, the Remo had a little more life to it, and the center miced EQ3 was a bit flat for my taste but micing it at the KickPort finished sucking out what tiny bit of tone left in the bass drum the rest of the way out.

I preferred the sound of the Remo head, as well.

That said, the more controlled, attack-heavy sound of the ported Evans might be a sound person's dream.

Doesn't the 'kick port' really impact the sound? I would have tried a normal ported head vs the Remo.
The number one issue with the unported head is not so much the bass drum sound for me, it's all the other stage sound the front mic would pick up. In my studio I place the mic just at the hole (port), but live the mic tends to go a little inside the drums, just to keep it more focussed and less impacted by the bleed from monitor wedges, guitar cabinets etc.
