Extra sharp chisel 1 - finger 0 :(

In the cold light of day, I'm fairly concerned about my ability to play med-long term. Although I'm mostly jovial about it, it's a fairly nasty injury. The damage couldn't be in a worse place from a drumming pov, & I've been told I may lose feeling & some function to the upper half of my index finger.

On a personal note, I'm picking up David floegel from the local train station this afternoon, & Matt Cowley's coming here for the hang tomorrow. I was really looking forward to some drumming shenanigans - bummer. That said, no doubt jamming will ensue. Madge is coming too, so I may get the Zoom out & post some footage :)

Sounds bad, I hope you will get over it soon!

I got my own chisel story:
25 years ago I complety missed the chisel and hit my thumb with a mallet(not hammer, mallet!). To this day I have no sensation in the tip of my right hand thumb.
There was no cut, but the tissue was crushed badly.
Doesnt affect my drumming or working life though, but I do have a constant small 'buzz' feeling in this finger.

Not good, Andy. Like you need your body to give you another handicap. No doubt you'll find a way. You always do :)

Wish I could be there with you guys but airports, flights and hotel stuffing around is a high price to pay ...
 
So sorry to hear this Andy, I hope you'll make a complete recovery... and try to stay away from drum building and playing... for your own sake.
 
Now that I have gigs on the horizon I am very cognizant of being careful to not injure myself! Heal fast Andy.
 
Oh man Andy, I feel your pain. I can count probably 30 scars on my 2 hands from working with electric. Is the wound topside of your fingey? I think that's much preferable to a bottom cut. Did they say if you cut any tendons or ligaments or anything like that? I'm glad you didn't show the wound, that makes me all squirmy. I could never work in a hospital. There's still a spot of your blood on the chisel. IDK, I would just immobilize it so it can't bend and use middle finger fulcrum to play. How did it happen exactly? Was it a hammer blow that drove it into your finger?
 
Oh bloody hell, Andy. It didn't sound like a "nothing" injury when you first mentioned it, and I'm not surprised you're worried. You don't do things by halves, do you?

That sucks! I hope you make a full speedy recovery brother. These things happen, especially when you don't expect them.

I am also a believer in the, "It could be worse" mantra. I was doing an observation shift for my EMT certification. I am standing around taking it all in. I was standing in front if the reader board looking at all the cases. My Heart this fall that... Then my eyes stop on the reason for the visit section that clearly reads, "Man vs. Lawnmower" part if me wanted to laugh like a jackal, part of me felt ill. I notice that the room listed is the one just to the side if the giant LCD reader board. I slowly lean to my right to look in. Sitting upright on a gurney us a rather calm and drugged man holding his hand upright with a rag around it. About an hour later the specialists comes in, removes the rag to expose a hand with the index and middle finger a little shorter than normal. The doctor goes to work with something like a nail clipper, but for bone, so that he could make enough room to sew the flesh up and over this persons improvisation of self modification. I had to leave the room twice before I found my center enough to be OK with all the clicking away of bone. LOL.

My old Dad always said that it's the dull tool that causes an injury - it forces YOU to do the work instead of the tool, which forces the tool into YOU!

You can rest, assured that the super-sharp chisel left a clean cut that typically heals faster.

My Dad used to say that if when learning to do something, the brain can't cope, the tool will find another way to get in...
