Evans Genera HD Dry - I’m a fan

So I did a gig with this new head and I have to say, I like it. I’ve never played one before (after all these years), and I was pleasantly surprised. The coated head was thick enough and with those little vent holes, the drum did sound a little dryer which was what I needed. So I got a nice “thwack” sound without it being too ringy. I recommend!

I'm a big fan of the Genera HD Dry (also the Genera and Genera HD) for snare batter. Have HD Dry's on a couple of my snares right now.

Does that underlay make the rimshot sound thick or chonky?

I have a Remo Power stroke 77 that I think is similar, and it sounds pretty good with a center hit, but I don't love the rimshot. It's just heavy or something.

I like the Evans ST. No underlay ring, just two slightly thicker plies.

Love the head from my own experience. Does it sound chonky to your taste? Maybe look up a couple of videos, our interpretations will be pretty different and there are some fantastic demonstrations of snare heads out there.
This guy does it really well:

Thanks for posting that vid. Yeah, whatever it is I don't like about the Remo, I hear in the Genera HD Dry, too.

Thick and chonky mean the same thing to me. I liked the rimshots I was getting.

But I must note, with this new band, I am in no way playing as hard as I can. They’re a working business and getting fired for being too loud is not in their vocabulary. So I’m usually coasting along at 50% volume and letting the drums speak and the whole kit sounds wonderful when you don’t kill it - drums can only get so loud (then I’ll mic up). It’s so nice that my hands don’t hurt, and I’m not watching blisters form and I get to play musically. This is a crazy situation 😂

Yes, thick and chonky mean the same to me, too. 😂

It's nice not playing so loud, isn't it? I've gotten to where I hate loud gigs. Lol

Whoda think I’d be rockin songs like “Jailbreak” and “All the small things” moderately? I love it! Or maybe in other bands I really am just playing too hard. Letting the drums speak is eye-opening with this band - and the audience and venue owners love them - I’ve been out playing every weekend so far!

Noice . Good to discover new sounds through minimal work and finance.

As I use mainly Aluminium Snare Drums, (already dry enough), I find the deeper snare drums work well for me with the Evans Coated Genera HD. The 5" go well with a single ply coated. (Insert whatever brand/line)

The Genera Dry was my first snare batter head. I couldn't tune it to my liking, but I was a baby drummer at the time, so I'll chalk that up to inexperience/ignorance. And, my brush wires would get caught up in the those little holes - again, I was probably doing something wrong. In my case, it was two strikes and "yer out." I've been happy with with Coated Ambassadors since then. Hopefully I've gotten a bit smarter in the interim, but I wouldn't bank on it!

Wasn't a fan until I'd recently heard one on a 6x14 Hendrix stave (that I'm going to ninja) on the 5th if it's still there. I get so mind set sometimes that even if I'm warming up to something I'd never consider I still fight that NO tapping me on the shoulder. Once my mind is made up I'm difficult to change but on this particular drum I think I can overlook my disposition on this dastardly head. 😃.

I really like the Genera Dry for about 3-4 days. After that, they sound like a dud to me. YMMV.
