Evans G1 batter head

Do any of you guys/gals use Evans G1 heads on the batter side of your toms? I'm running Remo emperors over ambassadors right now, and when I change heads next time I'm looking to do something a little different and give Evans a chance. I realize the G2s are really popular as batter heads, but I have two ply batters right now and I'm kinda curious as to how a 1 ply would play. I know a lot of drummers back in the day used one ply heads too so this is another reason I'm considering going this route. Is there something horribly wrong with this idea, or would I be making a wise decision?

As far as I know, it is absolutely fine to go with G1 Head numerous drummers are using that head so it shouldn't be a problem.

1-ply batter and 1-ply reso sounds great. Dave Weckl uses that combo, for example.

I have coated G1 over clear G1 on all my toms - sounds amazing. The purity of tone you can get is just what I like.

I run a coated G1 over a coated G1 on my two toms and love it.

I think I'll go for a G1 over G1 combo next time I change heads then. It sounds like it should be just fine. I know that the ambassador over ambassador combo has always been very popular over the years, so I didn't see any reason why Evans 1 ply heads shouldn't give a similar result. I'm glad my question wasn't too silly. I'm probably going to go coated over coated, hopefully the Evans coating doest chip off after a week like my Remos have...

I am a 1-ply batter & resonant head drummer. Go for it an experiment the different sound... Be patient and You will enjoy it!
In fact, I used an Evans G1 clear batter side on my 13"x11" high-tom for a while and it work fine. When the Remo Ambassador Smooth White came in, I placed it as batter on the same tom. Then Evans G1 clear moved down as resonant... perfect combination that pleased my taste.

I'm a g2 over g1 man(coated on both sides), but I know plenty of folks who dig one ply over one ply... More sustain and tone.

I play mainly punk, rock and funk, so I like a bit more control on my toms usually.

I recently discovered a real sleeper in the Evans line - the Strata 1000. It's a 10mil head, basically a G1, with a slight texture to it. So it's kind of between a clear and a coated head. You won't find it in most stores, it's a "concert" head, and appears in that section on their site.

In general, a 1-ply sounds quite sweet as a batter, but most hard-hitters shy away because of the durability factor. Hence the appearance of heavier 1-ply heads like the G+ (12mil) and the G14 (14mil.)

the Strata head is awesome

I recently did a jazz date where the studios kit had these on the toms....they are kind of that hazy gray and almost clear....

they sounded great under the mics ...nice tone....sort of like a very slightly brighter coated G1

The Strata batter is much like the Orchestral for the reso side.

Thanks Bermuda...haden't heard of those.

I wanna hear one with an ambassador reso...time to order!

I use an Evans G1 coated over a G1 clear on my Ludwig and Yamaha kits. The combination sounds great. Although as already stated, this may not be the best combination for newbies or hard hitters because of premature breaking or denting.

You can also maybe give the 'other' company (Aquarian) a chance. I recently tried Aquarian Texture Coated (they should use an easier number system... basically a single ply coated). Am very impressed and saved a few bucks. Slowly switching over. I run 1 ply coated on both batter and reso.

I am using the G14 batters on my toms. Single ply but obviously a heavy ply. I have used G2 clear but not G1. But since there are no rules.

I want to try the Aquarians too, I've heard really good stuff about their heads, probably give em a try after the Evans wear out.

IMO a drum is wide as wide open gets when you run clear 10 mil heads over clear 10 mil heads, any major brand will do. Anything else, even coated IMO subtracts frequencies. I like em as wide open as I can get. I've been using 10 over 10 forever. Yea they dent easier. Tone is more important to me. I am so used to responsive lively toms that when I play a kit that is all choked to hell I just don't use the toms, they're a joke to me.

Don't forget the other options out there for single-ply batters: G Plus (12mil) and G14 (14mil). I'm using a balanced set on my toms right now (G1 on the 10" tom, G Plus on the 12" and G14 on the 16" tom). Sounds incredible! Balanced tone, perfect for each individual drum.

Cheers!

Hey EvansSpecialist - any chance you could get a recording of how that head combo sounds? I'm interested, but can't just splash out on heads if I don't know the combo will work for me.
