DW Stock Heads...any good?

I just bought a used DW kit, but the seller threw in the DW stock heads with the drums. The heads are brand-new, not a mark on them. They have the inscription "coated/clear tom tom", and they have a white stripe around the perimeter. It says they are "made for DW by Remo USA".

Are these heads any good? (They actually sound pretty decent to me, but I don't have a great ear.) Thanks!

Neil Peart uses them live. They are basically modified clear ambassadors. IMO, they sound fine over some clear ambs on bottom.

Yup.

They are a mix of clear and coated Remo ambassadors, mostly clear, with a ring of coating.

Lots of top pro's use them.

There are two questions really,

1. are they any good? you question, they are American made Remo heads so yes, they are good.

2. Do they sound good?

That is a question only you can answer and you did, if you like them then that is all that matters.

I personally prefer Evans G2 coated on my DW kits.

I've used them on my Pacific CX's and they sound great; normally I expect to change stock heads right away but never felt the need with these. They're just about in need of changing, finally. No dents or problems, just old.

I think the DW heads are great, except I wear them out in no time. I play a bit heavy and can't afford to replace them all the time. So I have gone with EC2's...NOW when DW decides to sponser heads for me, I'll return to them......um, wishful thinking anyway.

Like was said above Peart uses them live so they can't be all that bad ;-)

I've heard them on kits and played on them in the stores and have never had one complaint on how they sounded.

Kind of my thinking as well!

I'm not lucky enough to be a DW owner but having played a kit with the DW heads on in a shop I think they sound great. Nice sound and tone with a bit of attack. This was in a big warehouse type place with probably the worst acoustics ever. I'd use them personally. Atm I'm using clear G2s but would happily use the DW stock heads.

I liked them when I got them. I actually still have my original DW BD head which I have never heard a better sound from. It's warm and phat with enough definition. The tom heads are one ply and so will not last too long but I would buy another set if it was easy to do so. The bottom tom skins I felt were a bit too thick and kinda dulled the sound too much. I replaced them with very thin Evans one ply and found I got more life from the toms.

I'm interested in Dennis Chambers' sound now. Anyone got any ideas about what heads he uses live or recording? Also does he use 14" Mastersound as his main hats?

Thanks
