Drum Center of Portsmouth

Also wanted to mention DCP put Canopus on the map for me. I remember when I became aware of them in the late 90s and thought ‘great, another thin maple kit’, and just ignored them….everything was thin maple back then. Shane and the crew kept talking them up and showed great videos. Then I started hearing them live and holy cow, then really got into their philosophy and real nerdy details on sound and large boutique variety. Then I pulled the trigger on an RFM kit last year based on one of their videos alone and it’s exactly what I wanted. Sorry to say I didn’t give them my business (bought lightly used at a great price) but nonetheless, shows how helpful these comparison videos are.

I’m working in Loudon, NH, this week, and took a side trip to DCP. One guy called it his “Mecca”. Another was shocked by all the gear. Good vibes all around.

This BDC finish is impeccable!

I purposely scheduled a few days away this month with the wife to Portsmouth. She can go to the beach, and I can go to Drum Center. I am very much looking forward to my visit there. I know Simon Phillips is doing a clinic while I'm in town, so I may go. I need a couple of drum bags for my gold DW set, and of course, you never know what cool cymbals or snares I might find.

Im from Australia if i ever do come to the USA thats the first place i would visit, i bought my 8x7 Ludwig Classic Maple from them the service was Fantastic great staff it arrived in 8 days.

The coolest thing I've read in weeks. Travel 10,000 miles to the other side of the planet and first stop a drum store. That's awesome.

I asked where he'd setup and the shop manager said "probably here" pointing to where Mike Mangini's kit is, in the center back area of the main showroom. They're expecting a decent crowd. I'll be gone by then, so if you go please give us a report.

Naturally! When someone starts chatting with me ("What do you think of this snare drum?") it's like a family member is sincerely asking for an honest opinion. Chatter amongst strangers who are drummers is almost like a family reunion with members you've never met.

This one dude was pecking away at a Zildjian Reflexx pad, playing clean doubles. I asked if he'd ever tried the MoonGel practice pad, and off we went, trying every practice pad on display. The MoonGel Workout Pad almost won my money, but I ended up purchasing the Zildjian Reflexx pad. Very quiet! Perfect for dorking out in a hotel room.

I get to try maple sticks for the first time, too! Nerdy.
