Don't Wear Your Favorite Watch While Drumming

Personally, I've always been cautious about it after a friend scratched up their favorite timepiece on the hi-hat. It's not just the risk of damage but also comfort—sometimes that chunky watch clashing with your drumsticks can throw off your groove!
All rings come off when I'm drumming. I remember wearing my rubber Zildjian bracelet on 2 occasions (forgetting to take it off) and the drumstick got caught in it and the stick went flying.

Also, I do wear a thin gold bracelet on my left hand that I had forgot about and the stick got caught in it and broke on 4 occasions and found it on the floor. Now instead of taking that off I just taped it to my wrist. A lesson to be learned in everything we do. LOL

Oh man, I feel your pain! I have a vintage Seiko that I absolutely love, and I did something similar once. Took it to get cleaned up and it came back looking amazing. Wore it to a friend's wedding and somehow managed to drop it while dancing – shattered the crystal. I was so bummed out! And yeah, I've learned my lesson about wearing watches during certain activities.

I dont wear watches i can not see how you could wear a watch while drumming anyway it would be so annoying to me the only Jewelry i wear is my wedding ring thats not annoying at all.

I have a reissue Hamilton Ventura watch that I bought about 15 years ago that I love. It's the coolest looking watch in the world, IMO. Elvis Presley wore one. The Men In Black wore them in their films. Three weeks ago, I had it serviced; cleaned, adjusted, new battery, new band, new crystal, got the scratches on the case polished out. It looked almost brand new. $185.

I went to an audition last Thursday night, played three songs, and I must have have hit the watch on the snare rim, because I broke the crystal and it stopped running. I was sick about it, so I dropped it back off to the jeweler next day, and he's going to fix it all up again this week.

I never wear a watch while playing drums, but for some reason, forgot to take it off this time...and paid the price.

These aren't cheap watches. They're not Rolex expensive, but still, a new one is about $700. I bought a $20 cheapo watch on Amazon to wear until this one comes back.

Moral of the story: Never wear your favorite watch while drumming. Mine looks just like the one in the photo.
Learned this with a cheap Speidel(?) band on a watch - was an early college gig - damned thing kept pinching me the entire first song so I took it off!

Man, that’s a bummer! Like you, I had to put it in for repair and ended up grabbing a cheapo watch to wear in the meantime. It’s a good reminder to be careful with our favorite pieces, especially during gigs or any intense activities.

Bob, you should have been wearing one of these:

I don't know about watches but I have worn an18 karat gold bracelet for many and had forgot to take it off drumming and broke it on four occasions and can't believe I actually found the small jump ring.

Thank God, I could repair it because I used to make jewelry. But now what I do is I tape it to my wrist because it's a pain in the neck to take on and off.

I know what you mean about wearing jewelry drumming. I remember wearing a Zildjian rubber bracelet drumming and the stick got caught right in the bracelet and flipped and hit me... that was a dangerous moment.

And just for the record, all rings come off!

What about putting a wristband over your bracelet? I'm diabetic and do that for my medical alert bracelet and there isn't an issue for me. It will also keep your bracelet cleaner in the long run.

Could you send a link of what a wristband is? I don't think I know what that is. Thanks drum buddy.

Every time I have obtained a new watch...... and wanted to show it off.....I have smashed the glass on day 1.
I am contacting John Cameron Swayze regarding this matter.
Sorry OP....I like that watch of yours.

A sweat band that you wear on your wrist. Think tennis or basketball player.
Oh, I know what a sweat band is... I was thinking more of a wide black leather band that snaps right on over the bracelet and it would also be cool looking!

Bob, you should have been wearing one of these:

I remember those Timex commercials. I wound up buying two cheap $20 watches off Amazon to wear on gigs from now on. I have always worn a watch, ever since I was in high school. I feel weird without one.

That's a good idea to be buying a cheap watch just because you haven't been without one since high school.

No matter what watch you're wearing the beating and smashing of the drum kit is just not good for any watch. It's not meant to take a beating like that and you know how we drummers are.

I would definitely go "cheap for the beat"! Lol

Right, I've learned. Regardless of what watch I wear to gigs, it now comes off and goes into my stick bag when the set starts.

Actually, I have quite a few watches, Back in the 90's, I bought several vintage 40's and 50's "tank" watches, the square and rectangular models that I liked. Most of them still run, but of course, they need to be wound every day.
