I’ve got a snareweight 80 that I use on a 6 lug snare to get a fat, funky sound. Works perfectly. After reading this thread, I think I should try them on my toms, too!

Yup, I do. I use them on my Classic Maples because they make miking them so much easier. On the extremely rare occasions where I'm not miked up, I won't use them, but I can't even think of a time where I've not used them in over a year. I only use them on my snare drum on my 3-ply Ludwigs. My 3-ply kit is so mellow and warm it doesn't need them.

I have tried this trick on my studio kit and it works just fine.
still able to tune and if necessary use some gel to really fine tune the sound and sustain.
