Did this for years too. Just thought that it was a matter of long limbs and a short torso. Realized that I was really slouching. Shoulders dropped and back hunched over. Found that if I sat up straight and squared up my shoulders, I could comfotably get the snare up above my thigh. There are some folks with little short T-Rex arms that I still have to play a trad grip sitting on their kits, but I no longer feel the need to drop the snare down in between my thighs. Makes a 4 hr gig much easier to get though as well. If I feel like I'm holding my arms up with the kit set up the way it is now, I realize that I'm reverting to slouching and straighten up. In a way, the belt high snare is saving my back.
