Blasphemy?

Uhhhh......oh...mmmmm...sir....I am going to say......uhhh.......Rogers?
Did you sneak some Tamas on there?.....Sunluck?......some MIJ's?.........
"Your Honor.......I do not see a case for blasphemy here......perhaps playful improvisation at best."
"Case Dismissed"......you are ALL free go............except you........Mister Drummer man"

Ok - the original 14x24 Rogers shell I re-wrapped a few months ago suffered in my garage during our last heatwave a couple of weeks ago - quite a bit of wrap warp and bubbling. In my laziness, I searched for another Rogers shell already wrapped on black and of course, couldn’t find one really cheap - but then found this 14x24 black Slingerland bass drum - and it was a virgin no less! The guy sold it to me for $250 (new wrap would’ve cost me another $175, and then I’d have to do all that work again).

So I picked up this Slingerland and discovered the holes for Rogers lugs fit in the Slingerland holes! I know it seems like a big lie, but I really didn’t want to go through the whole drum wrap process again. So I kept the shell as is, removed the Slingerland badge and replaced it with an air vent. The big giveaway is that I’m keeping the two pairs of Slingerland spurs and will run this drum with two pairs of spurs. Transferred heads, claws, and my Ludwig bass drum hoops and it’s a Frankenstein bass drum but it sounds great. And that Slingerland black wrap from the early 70s is still tight - I should just admit, doing your own wrap is NOT like how they do it in the factory!

I'm going to take a wild guess that no one will ever know unless you point it out to them like you did.

To my way of thinking, lugs should have standard hole spacing so that they're all interchangeable.

Wouldn’t that be cool though?

So at least I stayed in the same vintage anyway. The Rogers was from 1978 or so and the guy who had this Slingerland said he bought it new in 1975 and kept it really nice all this time.

Part of me wants to install a new Rogers single Swiv-O-Matic tom arm …..

In the back of my mind the spurs whispered to me but I had the lugs on my mind to much so it went away. Actually I knew it was a Slingerland shell straight away but didn't want to spoil everyone's fun. 😳

I’m wondering how anybody was supposed to solve this puzzle. I looked at it, and thought, “Is there a Tama lug casing snuck in there somewhere that I can’t see?” I didn’t see the inside of the shell (I would have recognized the fat/rounded re-ring right away). I guess the only clue that I could find would be the bracket for the second leg, but, once again, I was focused on the lug casings… 🤷‍♂️

There were no clues to be found!
A mystery wrapped in an enigma.

Swivomatic tom arm?..damn I love the Rogers look and the mattic tom holder is such a part of the drums I dreamt of as a teen. Will it put the tom out of comfort zone?. Also Bo..can you put the gray speckled interior in it just for the old Rogers look?. I'd have to do it. But don't mess with that Slingerland magic in the drum.

I can’t go that far. There might be that Slingerland mojo in there I do not want to mess with. The drum is probably pissed off as it is with the incorrect lugs!

Most of the Blaemire drums I primarily played for decades were from Blaemire shells coupled with lugs I took off a large multi-tom 1973 Rogers set that I never liked.

I pretty much subscribe to no form of gear religion.... whatever works.

You should hang out with Drum Workshop fanboys - there ARE rules 😂😂😂😂

"....Your honor.....we would like to re-try a blasphemeric case.....we have new evidence...........what do you got?
....a shell & lug conspiracy sir...we believe...it is far-reaching."
"Counselor!...you can't tell....next case."

Oh there have disciples of that religion long before DW was around - though, I admit, it has gotten worse.

In any case, compared to some of the stuff I've done, your bass drum here makes you a minor offender at best (though maybe not, they can get pretty fanatical). :)

I feel like I don’t even know you anymore. What have you become???

I can’t blame you. Wrapping drums is something I never want to do again. Nothing fun about it.
