Isn’t it amazing how many ‘first’ albums are among the very best of many bands? Is it because no one has ‘gotten to them’ regarding everything from the material to lyrics, recording, mixing, uggh. Once a big fat check for a recording contract is cashed, artistic control is ceded to the corpo.

I think it's more often the sophmore (-ish) album that's the bands' defining album. Some of the ragged edges have been slightly polished off, sound perfected a bit more, probaly still drawing from the pool of pre-album songs and yet before the corporate producer expectations settle in. But in general, the sentiment of first few albums seems to hold true in countless examples.
