Bass Drum Hoops

Hi, can you help here please. Should the curved edge of a bass drum hoop face out or inwards against the skin? Both edges are not painted, so not sure which way they are meant to go. Please can you help here. Thanks!

I wouldn't be so sure ; I used to owned a Tama Rockstar where all the claws were bent because the former owner faced the curved side outward, and the Tama claws are flat.
My answer : if the claws are rounded : round outward, if the claws are flat : flat outward.

I have a hard time picturing the heavy Tama claws bending from a rounded wood hoop. I think those are some type of cast metal.

As I said, my kit was a Rockstar, much lighter stuff than the Starclassic claws. They indeed bent.
But they were meant to sit against a flat surface, like the Starclassic ones.

When I owned an INDe maple kit, I immediately set it up with flat side facing inward against the head. It did not work it would not stay centered. Just was wrong. I called INDe and they said to use curved side inwards. Worked that way. Not sure why - that is only kit I ever owned where did not want flat side contacting head and abutting shell.
