do you mean as in they dont play live instruments? or dont do live shows? as theyre currently on tour in the USA :)
It's the same as the Steely Dan story, for a couple of decades Kraftwerk released a series of iconic studio albums but never played live.
Really ALL these studio bands started touring regularly after Napster and Spotify. There is no income from recording and most musician's income comes from playing live.

The Dan also did do the shows captured on Alive in America in '93-94.

No sure how well Two Against Nature was received, but I believe Jack of Speed at least was popular. I've played it. Catchy tune.

Steely Dan stopped touring around 1974, after which they released three of their most successful and iconic albums : Royal Scam, Aja and Gaucho.
They reformed and played live from 1993.
Kraftwerk stopped playing live from around 1981 to 1991.

Yello. I think they took a break from 1983 to 2016, then also for the last 5 years. I went to their "virtual concert" in Zurich, which was just a 3D movie.
