Artstar II

Metallica released new single, Lux Aeterna. In te video I saw Lars playing famous black and white Tama Artstar II. Maybe he'll play them again on this new album tour. I think that Artstar that he is playing doesn't have the power toms. Maybe Tama made them again?
Maybe they are starting to sell Artstars again as a Lars Ulrich Signature Kit?

Looks like parts of either the Black album tour kit or the Justice tour kit. It's hard to tell from the video, but they dont look white to me, rather a light grey color.

Both kits had black hardware so that is of no help.

Maybe he had the toms cut down a couple inches each.

But i hope you’re right… Tama need to reintroduce the Artstar model

It looks like power toms to me. Just he's only using the 10 and 12, whereas his older kits were either 12,13,14,15 up top, or later, 10, 12, 13, 14, 10, 12, 14, 16 up top, with two 18" floor toms.

Taking away the bigger toms, it just looks smaller.

I doubt in this day Tama would go back to mounting the tom brackets right on the shells.

Maybe they will reintroduce the Artstars with modern mounting systems and. I mean, the original Superstars' brackets were on the shells, but now we have Superstar Classics, with the STAR Mount I think, and same shells as Starclassic Maple

Tama trash canned those old line names in the 80's (Superstar, Imperialstar, Royalstar) and introduced (Artstar, Granstar, Crestar, Rockstar) ..... and things really took off for them. And then they reintroduced the Superstar and Imperialstar names (though no longer the #1 and #2 tier drum lines).
Stranger things have happened, but I don't really see Artstar making a comeback. Starclassic fills the Artstar II roll, now ...... and is very, very popular.

Doh, you are correct. I knew converted from 12" being the 1st tom to the 10" being the first. I messed up the order afterward.

Though that makes my point all the more clear, without the 14" and 16" rack toms, the remaining 10 and 12 on his kit in the video looks smaller, even though they are indeed power toms.

What was the point of Lard having two exact same floor toms?
I get why Buddy did it. (he was a classy guy that needed a classy place to place his towels on. His were both 16X16 though)
But did Lard ever even hit the second 18, or was he just leaving his towels there just like Buddy? I can't imagine Lard being influenced by Buddy at all, but I was wrong once last year so...idk.

Tama would have to design a new mount system or just do direct -to-shell like British Drum does or create a new shell mount like INDe or SQ1. It would be interesting to see if Tama could re-engineer the Starcast mount and give it triple flanged shape.

Tama was all about thicker shells and triple flanged hoops in eighties. When Starclassic Maple program started in 1994, Joel Rosenblatt said Tama wanted to do to the Gretsch thing but with better hardware. Hence the Starcast Mount (the original one was half of a hexagon shape that protruded like RIMS.

The last incarnation of the whole Artstar-era was the Artstar Custom ( not counting the Artstar ES ), it featured die cast hoops and shell mounted tom brackets. It was available along with the Starclassic line.

.
Tama had already offered Artstar Customs with Starcast option.. and they also had all shallow sizes available .. These drums were not that thick at 7mm toms and 9mm kick.. more of a medium thick .

The 2000 catalog, Artstar with long lugs, die cast hoops and very deep toms and also strange pseudo standard size. 10x8, 12x8, 13x10, 14x10. ??? Gold logo on the bass drum And nice colours for the shells too.
I’ve got a catalog from 2005, Artstar we’re still available.
