Any sonic benefit to mounting cymbals 'upside down'?

No sonic benefit to my knowledge.

I believe the "upside down" thing originally stemmed from guys hanging them from those gigantic two tiered racks back in the 80's. I still see the odd ride cymbal hanging from an inverted boom on a stand, but I'd be willing to bet everything I own that it's nothing more than aesthetic.
 
I can't imagine any sonic benefit. The cymbal is still resting on the felt (or whatever else you use instead of them).

Mostly, I think people hang cymbals that way for positioning purposes. Sometimes it's just more practical to have the boom above the cymbal.
