Ambassador Coated or Clear for Church snare?

I'm donating new batter heads for my Church's kit. I already got a coated ambassador for the snare (Gretsch Blackhawk wood 8-lug 14"x5"). But I'm concerned the kids will get frustrated with the look of it when the coating starts wearing off. Today someone offered me a brand new 14" clear ambassador real cheap. No coating could mean less change of appearance, and less frustration. But I've never tried this, hence the question. Has anyone tried this on a snare? How does the sound compare to a coated? How does it wear compared to a coated?

I would stay with a coated batter head in your situation, I just think that they help control the snare's sound. If your wondering about the coating wearing off, next time get an Evans G1 coated or better yet, a Power Center Reverse Dot. I've found that the coatings on the Evans heads seems to last a bit longer and the Power Center Reverse Dot will give you more control over its sound. I use them on most of my snares in most venues.

audiotech: That's what I was thinking. I really wanted G1's for them. Alas, the local distributor say that only Remo tops up their stocks regularly. Evans deliveries are few and far between. And don't even talk about Aquarian. They probably haven't topped up their stocks in years.

We actually have incredibly fast turnaround (if they place an order by 4:30pm EST, we'll ship the same day). If they can't get them for you, you can always order online. What's the local shop?

EvansSpecialist: Im in Quezon City, Philippines. The only local chain that offers Evans (and Remo) is JB Music. I don't know where the problem is, but I've never had availability problems with Remos.

+1 for the Evans Coated Power Center Reverse Dot.

Good sounding head, the coating lasts past Remo's and since you mentioned kids at a church - the dot is more forgiving that a regular coated single ply. I've also had very nice luck sound wise with Evans coated G2's.

If it's only Remo, then maybe the coated Controlled Sound Reverse Dot head or an Emperor.

Haven't ever liked the sound of clear heads on snares.

FWIW: For church youth groups I think 2-ply heads are the norm since they usually get some abuse at some point.
