I think you’re ok to try it. The only physical difference is if the pads are wired opposite which means they won’t work. But I doubt you’ll fry anything. The DM5 was released as a sound module and I don’t recall Alesis saying they only worked with their own pads and a lot of people were making homemade piezo triggers for it to tape to their drums. I say turn down the volumes, plug in a pad and see if the trigger light lights up.
I could be wrong but I don't think the DM5 has dual trigger inputs. If not, you won't be able to get separate head and rim sounds when using two-zone trigger pads.

Seems I remember that, so you have to use a diff patch cord with tip and ring separated, I guess. But this would be a backup module if the TD6 fails onsite at a gig...until I buy another Roland one.
No , I have tried Roland pads with the DM5 and with the Alexis I/O and they worked just fine. The only difference is with some Roland modules the pads might need to have a 100 ohm resistor to prevent them from being too hot ( sounding too loud even at low volumes) but no problems otherwise. Same for diy pads.
