13x9 vs.14x10

With the other sizes being 26x14 and 16x16. What do you guys think would go better with them? 14x10 or 13x9?

I'd love to get 14x10 for the sound and look but I'm a bit apprehensive about the possiblity versitality issues. (Oof, big words)

13x9 I'd think might be more versatile, easier to position, and easier to transport.

Opinions? I've been proven wrong before, after all.

10x14 is sometimes problematic tuning-wise, it's that in-between size from a rack to a small floor tom (although I do have more than a few in my arsenal.) But if choosing just one, I'd go with a 9x13. It will look just fine over the larger kick.

Another 13 x 9 vote. Just so you have a semi high voice on the kit. Actually I would go 12 or 10. But yea the 13. You want some distinction between toms, since you only have 2, I would go with the biggest separation you can get.

Yeah, for separation's sake, I'll most likely be getting the 13. This will be the Big Boomin' Rock kit, so I'll be going with the 13 au lieu de 12 or 10.

If I had to choose, it would be the 13" x 9" tom in that arrangement.

Another vote for 26, 13, 16 ...

Go Dave Grohl or go home!
14"x15" Tom
16"x18" Floor Tom
16"x24" Bass Drum
That was Nirvana kit. He used a 13x9 with Them Crooked Vultures (16 and 18 floors, 24 kick).

But yeah, + however many we're up to now... 13x9 FTW! (I don't have a 14x10 to compare, but I do have a 12x8 and it seems too small for what I'm wanting to hear atm).

What I like about a 10x14 is the sound--that ONE great, satisfying combination of attack and tone you can get.

What I don't like is that it's just really got that ONE sound. It's a pretty great sound, but....

It's big, pushing the drum either up, or over.

Not THAT MUCH weight difference, but you can tell for sure.

13-16-18 always works, and you can get MORE sounds (IMO) from the 9x13 than any other depth (I have have them all...) of 13" daim.

On a 26, it's not up too high, and doesn't have to be angled too much.

Mine is over a little bit, so it can be lower ( just above the second lug), but it's center isn't over too far where I have to reach. It's just comfortable.

The 13 is the size I always go back to (between 12,13 & 14" toms).
A 12 is great too, but the 13 can get the higher tone and still sound really good, but with the rest of the drums being bigger, it just sounds like it's supposed to be there to me.

Just my .45 cents

Oh I know. That was my fav set up of his. Brakes my heart he is using DW now.

I'd get the 13x9 , unless you are plannig to add a 18". in that case I'd get the 14 to have more regular intervals

A drum collector fron the capital city wants to sell me a 70's Slingerland in Natural Maple. 24 inch bass drum, 13 and 14 rack toms in the already stated sizes, and 15 and 16 suspended floor toms. Thinking of a 24"/13"/16" setup. 700 dollar, tempting..:

Cool, I'd jump on that if I had the chance. Too bad it doesn't come with one of their freakish 4-legged 18" floor toms, though. That's the only thing I can think of that could make that kit even cooler.

DO. IT.

If you got the cash, snag those puppies and look for a 12" and 18" on eBay.

Thanks for that Karl and everyone, you're help and advice is appreciated!

Also, I just wanted to point out that your sparkle set is very attractive and is one of the main reasons I got my Vintage Red Sparkle Club Date!

I almost always use the 9x13 or the 8x12 on my old 70s Gretsch darling.
I hardly ever use the 10x14. It's just to big to sit on top of the 22 inch bass.
It is also floor tomlike in sound.

I'd say go with either 13 up/ 16 down; or 14 up/ 18 down. If you don't mind the height.

I had 13x9 and 14x10 up on a 22, and after toying with the idea for a while, decided to cut them down a bit. I haven't gotten too far with it, but they're about half the depth they used to be - they looked a bit like bobdadruma's kit above when I started.

The bass drum hoops now have wood laminate in the grooves, but the hardware is stripped off again. Waiting for better weather to put a finish stain on them. I'll probably put these in the drum modification thread when they're finished:
