I find 4 inches to be too much of a spread, usually. When I play a 10/14 or 12/16 in the studio, I usually tune them a little closer. I'm a fan of either 12/14 or 13/16. I think I might like a 14/18, actually, but I've only played on other peoples' kits. I'd have to spend some time tweaking and experimenting to see if that would be satisfying to me, personally.
i like 10" rack and a 14" floor
I don't know why there's something about this set up i just really love. Probably because i like the smaller, higher pitched toms
I've been driving a 10" & 14" configuration for quite a few years, and I just love the possibilities the combination offers. If the drums are any good, they should have enough range to be tuned to an interval between an octave and perfect fourth and still retain similar tonal characteristics.
Generally i'd go for 12/16 simply because i love the sound and look of bigger toms. Bearing that in mind, my IDEAL setup would be 13/16/18 with a 24 kick.
I'm a big guy and i like big drums, the more the merrier

I have a 12/14/20 and a 13/16/22 all in the same finish so I can mix and match. I usually play a four-piece kit, but every once in a while I set up my kit with 12/14/16/22
i really like 12/14 as in 12*9 & 14*12, and alltough my current setup might be a little extreme with 13 shorstack and 18 floor, its the perfect match for me. i crank them up quite a bit just to get more timbale and wood.
When using two rack toms I like them spaced relatively far, so either 10/14 or 12/16, depending on what the situation calls for. When playing a 5-piece I also often play 10/12/16.
I generally play a 6-piece with 10-12-14-16 configuration. Two up, two down.
