1-3 or 2-4?

2 & 4, with the backbeat/snare. Good question!

Being a miserable old , I personally HATE audiences clapping along, because in my experience, very few people have the natural rhythm to actually clap along in the right place.

Especially when they've had a beer or two.

Far better to let them DANCE along to your music. Although this will also be completely unconnected to the timing of the tune you're playing,
at least it's quiet....

I used to play in a band in which the singer kept a couple tambourines for audience members. We had one regular fan, a great supporter and super sweet person, who had noooooo sense of time. When she'd play tambourine, everyone had to do their best to tune her out or the tempo would be wrecked. Lol

My wife is like that. I have to ask her to please stop clapping before I go insane. 😣

It's all relative to the style and how you grew up. I remember looking around at church as a kid and wondering how half the people could not figure out how to clap on the backbeat. Now I'll be giving music appreciation lectures to college students and they couldn't clap on the beat if you smacked them over the head with it. They can either clap backbeats or every beat, anything else trips them up.

2 4 6 1 3 5 7

I remember watching something about the recording of Elton John's Bennie and The Jets, where they added the live effects in the studio, the producers added a little audience clapping on 1 and 3 as well for added realism.

Funny, it actually works perfectly in that song. Probably the tempo.
