“ Open” tuning ?

How do you define open tuning and how do you best scribe this sound? Heads, tuning, and wood type on the drums?

I thought open tuning was about how a guitar is tuned, not drums.

"Open tunings” are when the unfretted or open strings of the guitar are tuned in such a way as to sound a specific chord."

Maybe open tuning on drums is to specific notes or intervals?

That's what jumped to my mind, too.

Maybe in the case of drums, it means unmuffled heads? I'm not too sure.

I think "open" refers to no (or less) damping. And it's probably more about resonance and timbre than sustain, IMO. So you can tune some sustain out and retain openness.

Open means unmuffled. Single ply skin with no muffling apparatus. Ring and tone, tuned on the high side.

Open tensioning
you know drums are organic
tension each side evenly (if you're able) then put 2000 notes in them and they settle in where they want to go.
It's not's like we have total control Drums have their own life
They'll self correct if you are honest and sincere with them
(that's right reach for your Jda Dictionary on that one! 😁

Open tuning? Concert toms.
Perhaps the intervals can be tuned to an "open G" or other note.

I guess if it just means tuning for a clear tone without muffling, all my tunings are open tunings. I rarely use muffling or premuffled heads, other than the BD. Depending on which kit and what the gig is, I might go with same pitch top and bottom, or bottom head tighter by varying degrees to control sustain. 95% of the time, I'm using an Ambassador, with the occasional Emperor thrown in.

Open tuning often regarded as a guitar type tuning. I’ve never heard term to describe a drum sound but as mentioned melodic toms/ concert toms can be tuned to specific notes within a C scale for instance and be in harmony with each other. Another example would be a set of concert tympanies which would be tuned to a specific pitch or note as you fit the structure of a song and can change on the fly with the tuning pedal

Tuned for maximum sustain. All drums will have a sweet spot. Some have a broader range that can be open-tuned. No dampening. Best tuning. LOL.
