I'm sorry you didn't pick up on the extreme hyperbole of the armpits comment.
It meant how you hold your sticks means absolutely nothing toward to outcome if you have common sense.
you play the way you are comfortable... the OP is comfortable in matched
The "hard way" would be wasting time...
Books, videos, etc etc etc.
None of it means anything if you don't play music.
What is the point of learning an instrument?
To play music.
Want to improve?
Play music and make it feel right... learn how it's supposed to feel by listening obsessively.
There's not a book or video in the...
Play music
Hold the sticks in your armpits if you are comfortable expressing yourself that way.
Just play music
Make a desirable and contributing sound ... that's it
Worry about sound.
I understand we are in the age of "YouTube instruction" and being spoon fed information
I'm not here for that
I started a thread to offer classic advice to those starting their journey in this music
However they want to process that advice and apply it is up to them ... the journey IS the...
How?
How has anyone in history learned how to play this music?
You really need your hand held in that area?
If so I cannot help you.
Sorry if that sounds harsh but there's not a lot of hand holding in this business ... and there's also a lot of tough love.
It seems like some here want to be...
who said anything was mysterious or ambiguous?
certainly not me
I'm actually shocked at how many do not understand the concept... I thought this was common knowledge to seasoned players
I started this thread in an attempt to help players starting their journey into this music
That is the...
I don't understand why you feel there are two interpretations happening here
You learn to swing your quarter note so that when you add to it ... which is inevitable ... everything feels amazing and the band effortlessly paints upon your canvas.
This is not about one way or the other ... it's...
What does it mean when someone says
"man, that band really swings!' ... or "he really swings that band" ... or "they are swinging hard tonight" ...?
does it mean they are really good at "ding dinga ding dinga ding" ... does it mean they are really good at playing skip beats and triplet...
I love ya man
But every one of your posts I read get further and further from the point and relate less and less to anything I've posted.
Please do not confuse anything I've typed in these pages with the contents of that video.
I wish I could delete this thread
I never expected so much...
Nothing but respect for all of you
Did not mean to start an uproar just wanted to make a suggestion toward a concept that many have found to be highly instrumental to their approach.
Sometimes the journey in figuring out what a concept means is what holds the key and not being handed the...
If you truly desire to understand the concept I recommend sitting in person with someone
Typing it out on a forum becomes difficult and is pretty much impossible
The original post was simply meant to share an age old concept that has helped countless musicians not only drummers with those you...
I truly meant no disrespect but I can see how one could take it that way
But that's the best way to say what I meant
When you don't understand the concept and are not willing to or have the desire to sit with someone who does understand it can be difficult to comprehend.
Dismissing it...
None of this has anything to do with a metronome.
I think metronomes actually do more harm than good when we start to think of them in this light
Like everything starts and stops with one
You may or may not hear it in my playing but I sure try
a swung quarter note is not a thing ... but you can swing your feel playing nothing but quarter notes.
I think many are thinking about notes on a page and metronomes.
This is about air between sounds created on a surface
I think you are thinking in the right direction but simplifying it a touch
But yes ... elasticity and air
It's one of those things where when you hear it you say , Yes! that's it
This is a very similar theory
Imagine John Bonham or Steve Jordan playing the most basic drum beat ... and then some kid at Guitar Center who is a good player playing the same beat.
Air pockets
I think you are thinking about a "swung quarter note" instead of quarter notes that swing.
It exists
quite commonly actually
Like I said above ... if you are not immersed in the life where it is required I can completely understand how this can sound bizarre
We sit with metronomes and...
I can see how things can be considered "terribly defined" when you don't understand the concept
I meant that will all due respect.
It takes quite a bit of desire to play this music to take a dive deep enough to achieve this feel ... and no it doesn't require other instrumentation to be...
I offer it to anyone with the desire to have a mature feel.
once you understand how to approach a quarter note this way and create those desirable air pockets players with seasoned ears will notice and want you to accompany them.
This isn't something you just ask someone to do and they say...
