    Chad Smith

Well, he's a rock drummer. He's done lots of good things with RHCP, laid down tons of nice grooves, and his foot technique seems pretty cool. Overall, I think of him in the same light as Peart, Barker, Keith Moon (go ahead and hate me for that one) and others, who fit well in the context of the...

I was wrong. I admit it. *Bass Drum Tuning*

So a little while ago I requested some advice getting a good jazzy sound on my 18" Sonor Force 3005 maple bass drum. I'm using 2 Fiberskyn 3 heads; FA on the batter and FS3 Bass on the reso. This thing was ringing like CRAZY (wish I could get my toms to sustain like that), but I operated under...

A Remo Guy's Thoughts on Evans Level 360

Heya, I have been a pretty diehard Remo fan for many years, and started to develop a distaste for Evans that I thought may be unfounded (fueled also by the D'Addario / ProMark incorporation, of which I am not a fan, and all that). I've heard a lot about Level 360 heads. I've been in the market...

    Lars Ulrich

I don't want to some off like a jerk like I did in the Neil Peart thread, but I can think of some things about Lars that aren't for me. I don't want it to be considered bashing or hate, though, just things I think personally. He did come off as a jerk, especially in the older days, in...

    What's your latest purchase?

Just yesterday, some Cympads. I've been kind of curious for a while. I was very skeptical, but also VERY surprised at the noticeable difference in sound and feel, particularly for the hats. I'd highly recommend them.

Abe Laboriel Jr. Breaks a Stick at SNL 40

This happened at SNL 40, Saturday Night Live's 40th Anniversary TV event, when Abe was backing Sir Paul McCartney singing "Maybe I'm Amazed." Here's the video. The stick breaks right around the 4:30 mark. http://www.hulu.com/watch/751650 Anyway Abe, feel bad for ya big guy! You handled it...

    Salt Water Bath for Cymbals?

Hi everyone, I'm thinking of exploring possibilities with salt water baths for a couple cymbals, for a couple reasons. In the Big and Ugly thread, this was mentioned, and I noticed that opentune posted some hats he had modified, which looked interesting. The cymbals in question are a 20" Sabian...

How to make hi-hats swing sideways?

Hi everyone, I've seen some videos of Steve Smith, Jojo Mayer, etc. playing music where they kept pretty quick time on the left foot and the hats moved in an interesting way -- they kind of "swung" back and forth, left and right, with each note, instead of just staying put. Does anyone know how...

Using tuning to muffle 18" bass?

Heya, I have a 8"/13"/18" bop kit put together out of some new Sonor Force 3005 Maple drums I got recently. The 18" bass drum came from the seller with an EMAD batter and an EMAD resonant with a port hole -- for my purposes, I felt obligated to replace those. I put on a Remo Fiberskyn 3 batter...

    Tuning woes

Yep, I'd recommend doing opposite lugs with the DrumDial. Also, a Coated Emperor is a pretty good snare head, but you could probably reduce your overtones a little more easily with Powerstroke, Controlled Sound, or even Coated Pinstripe options.

    Most resonant / warm drums?

Hey, I need some new shells. I'm 17 and have been playing for 7 years. I started on a cheap Rockwood kit and soon moved on to my current kit, a Pearl Forum. The shells are very low-quality Poplar, and are not cutting it for me. I've switched everything else (heads, cymbals, pedals, etc.) and...
