I like deeper snares because I can get more body at higher tunings. I also play in loud environments. 5" snares bottom out or choke at a certain volume. I find the deeper snares more versatile. I have several 6.5s, as well a 7, 8, and a 10. I only have one 5" and I never use it.
Just put your Equalizers on your new drum for a test run.
I like Puresound, Fat Cat, and Canopus quite a bit. I currently have Canopus 42 wires on all mine. They sound great but I'm not sure they are worth the additional expense. I could be happy with Puresound or Fat Cat 30s.
