    Pearl BLX, Fixed Bass Drum

I really like those two cymbals. I think I'm going to start looking for a 20" to take the spot of the 18

    Pearl BLX, Fixed Bass Drum

Here's my recently-ish acquired Pearl BLX kit (late 80's, early 90's I believe) all set up. Per previous post the bass drum edge was badly damaged in shipping and later fixed, so far it is holding up and sounds great. The 13" tom is heavier that my entire 3 piece maple kit; moving these things...

    Repairing damaged bearing edge

I debated shipping the drum in to precision for repair, but ultimately decided that as long as sounds good, holds it tuning, and doesn't begin to show signs of breaking again, I'm happy. Although I do have 6 million dollars currently burning a hole in my pocket and an uncle who works as an...

    Repairing damaged bearing edge

Well things turned out pretty much the best that I could hope for. Two friends who help run a fabrication shop just a few blocks from my place of work generously offered to have the drum repaired free or charge. They advised that they would not be able to color match or restore it to perfect...

    Repairing damaged bearing edge

They seem to be around enough that I will be able to snag one sooner rather than later if I need to. The most common seem to be red laquer, and those seem to be the most expensive. Maybe a recording custom association upcharge?

    Repairing damaged bearing edge

I can see how it might seem odd to accept a partial refund and keep the damaged drum. Considering the rest of the drums were as described and in fine shape minus some cosmetic wear and tear, I decided that simply accepting the partial refund and forgoing the hassle of shipping the damaged drum...

    Repairing damaged bearing edge

Reverb has settled the return claim and it seems that I will be able to keep the drum in addition to receiving a partial refund for the damage. Best outcome I suppose. I do really like the look of the full length lugs, so I may just try to repair what I can and see how it works out. The...

    Repairing damaged bearing edge

The package looked rough when it arrived. Lots of scuffs and marks but the only tears were on the side opposite the damage edge strangely enough. It is out of round for sure, but doesn't seem to extend beyond the cracking.

    Repairing damaged bearing edge

On my current 3 ply maple set up I like to leave the bass drum unmuffled, but seeing as this drum is 6ply birch drum (much heavier!) maybe I was I'll try some new things out. Does anyone have any experience with shops in NYC that cuts down drums and touched up bearing edges? Precision looks...

    Repairing damaged bearing edge

I have actually wanted a shallower bass drum but never had a practical reason to get one really... The refund process has begun with reverb so it should all be sorted out this coming week. I'm not quite sure if I will need to ship it back to the seller or not so that will likely be a deciding...

    Repairing damaged bearing edge

Thanks for all the replies. Prices at Precision don't look too bad. I have filled chipped wood with epoxy before never on a bearing edge and nothing that has split like this drum has. Time to wait to see what the refund process turn out like and then decide

    Repairing damaged bearing edge

Hey all, Just received some drums today via UPS and it seems they were a bit rough. The seller (via reverb) was quick to respond and everything is insured so hopefully it gets worked out quickly. I know there are fairly straightforward fixes for small chips in bearing edges, but does anyone...

    1958 slingerland mahogany

Thanks for the advice so far. Going to message the seller for more pictures before making a decision to travel out to see them in person.

    1958 slingerland mahogany

From and ad on Craigslist. They are asking 800. I really like the sound of similar slingerland kits but don't have much experience vetting online ads with them. Thoughts?

Issues with finger tightening tension rods

The "wiggle method" is what I do as well to simulate finger tight. I actually could have bought the matching snare for pretty cheap but passed, kind of regret it.

Issues with finger tightening tension rods

I haven't tried these. My current tuning approach seems to be working, but I do prefer to simply finger tighten down to the rim so maybe I will try one.

That solves it. Thanks for the reply!

Issues with finger tightening tension rods

I am unable to finger tighten the tension rods to the point of contact with the hoops on all 3 drums on my kit (Sakae trilogy). They all stop turning about half an inch above the rim. Its not a giant issue because I simply use a drum key to tighten them just until they dont move around. (They...
