Watching gig drummers as a learning experience

I might have been 14 or 15 in 1968 and saw a horn band in the parking lot at EJ Korvettes. I'll never forget the drummer. Has inspired me to this day. It's the feeling he generated that I still remember. Didn't know who he was. It is all about the feel in the context of the music.

What Is The Definitive Preference Between DW 5000, Pearl Eliminator or Tama Iron Cobra?

I have an Iron Cobra but the Elimanator seems less bulky. Also in my situation it works well with the Dixson lift on my 20.

Sympathetic snare buzz, any real cures?

Being jammed into the corner doesn't help either.

    Your Pedal Suggestions

I'm not a Pearl guy but I do love my Eliminator pedal.

What was the best sounding live concert you attended?

Me too with Pat Metheny Group - Asbury Park 83 or 84. The dynamics were insane.

How well must you like a band before you see them in concert?

I like going to smaller venues and clubs based on the artists and vibe. I will go many times not knowing the artist - and finding some of my favorite music.

drummers who can't read music notation

I was just with my drummer friend who doesn't read and noticed he doesn't count - at least the way you count when you read - 1 e and a etc. Hard for him to figure out hits and phrases systematically. He's got to feel it.

    Drum shed advice

8 years ago I retired ,we moved, and I had the dream of sound proofing an upstairs room. Once I woke up I realized it was not going to happen I found a lock out at a rehearsal space. My own room where I set up my drums - recording gear etc. $250 a month raised to $275. It worked for me. We are...

    DW Slide Track

I had both - the Corder was more light weight - and plenty sturdy. But I had an issue with one of the mounts - so if I remember I just bought the top part of the DW - and it wouldn't fit in the Corder track - it was bigger. So I bought the DW track. It is really heavy. As bad as a freaking snare...

Listening to music that you can’t play well

I gig classic rock but love all kinds of jazz -especially lately Brazilian jazz. I try to shed on it best I can - sometimes figuring out the tunes is baffling but I love trying to figure them out. Like this.

    Your perception of YouTube/IG/TikTok drummers

Props to anyone who can make a living playing their instrument. If it's being a solo video star so be it. Most of us grew up with various forms of rock. Now there doesn't seem to be much new stuff anymore - bands aren't a thing - generally. What's a young kid looking to aspire to?

    Mixing/Recording Drums From "Drum Room"

You can get Behringer xr 18 or similar and use that as an interface. You can monitor with effects and verbs etc thru the mixer with no noticeable latency and record raw into Reaper. I use a cheap laptop with a solid state external drive. You can use a tablet from the drum room connecting through...

What Was Revolutionary About The Band/Levon Helm Drum Sound?

Rock of Ages is basically their greatest hits -a live recording from 71 with a great horn section. I think at their peak. Levon super funky - what a right foot. I played at the barn (2008) on Levon's drums at the time - a newer Slingerland (Nashville I think) set before they got the new Gretsch...

Thinking of getting my dream kit.

Yup - hear them in person if you can. Call ahead and tell them you're coming with cash. A long time ago (1989) I went to Sam Ash with the intent of getting a Noble and Colley snare $500- and walked out with a bronze Black Beauty $250. Had no idea it was bronze - just knew it sounded the best to...
