Sam Ash is closing 18 stores: UPDATE-Now closing all stores

I'm down near ATL now but I grew up in northern NJ - that whole stretch of Rt 17/Rt 4 area by the mall is a death trap lol. I randomly visited that Sam Ash but was closer to and favored Ritchie's Music and to a lesser degree, Robbie's Music over on Rt 46 in it's heyday.

    Ride cymbal height

It's typically a mixed bag depending on my kit configuration. 1-up/2-down it's like Bongoman's; same height and angle as my rack tom. 2-up/2-down it's roughly 6-8 inches above and hovering the rim and at same angle as the second mounted tom. I have been experimenting with leaving it in the...

    Turkish Cymbals

Awesome, Bo. I tried a bunch of stuff at their NAMM booth, the Millenium series (crashes, hats, rides) was my favorite.

    NAMM Show 2024 - Friday January 26

I was playing on one of the GEWA kits when Eric Moore came over to drop his bags and proceed to demo the main kit - gave him a fist bump and said 'Rock on brother'. :) Andrew Schreive was one of the other reps one the Gretsch side - chatted briefly, told him I enjoy the YouTube unboxing videos...

    Custom In Ear Monitor Recommendations?

2-3 drivers is a good starting point if your main preference is just the drums. If you want to blend in a touch of vocals, guitars, and keys - almost like a mini-concert in the ears - then 5 drivers is a good compromise. To that end [for now] I use a 5-driver IEM set from Juice's Music Shop...

That's it i'm getting Superior Drummer

Ralf is a great player and demonstrator indeed. You will not regret purchasing Superior Drummer; I've owned it for a few years now and love every minute playing with it. As CW mentioned it is geared towards studio projects, and the feature set can be VERY overwhelming but it is hugely...

    Your perception of YouTube/IG/TikTok drummers

Posting just performance-based content would probably get a bit stale after a while, even if I had 100,000 permutations of solos or songs lined up to film and post. From a financial standpoint, if the money was just as good and just as sustainable as my IT job, it would be up for consideration...

    My NAMM 2024 report

I missed you, Bermuda! I did visit the Conn-Selmer area a few times hoping to catch you and my previous teacher, Pat Petrillo (who I watched his performance at the Yamaha stage outside). I've only attended NAMM 3 times, including this most recent January one so I don't have any "golden years"...

    Your perception of YouTube/IG/TikTok drummers

I pretty much share the same sentiments. To paraphrase an observation from Jeff Porcaro in an MI Vault video, he says that there loads of drummers with great chops and shedding ability but at the end of the day their playing lacks a "social element / playing with others" which is important to...

    My New Gretsch Brooklyn kit

Well done and what a steal. Gorgeous specs and color - enjoy them!! :D

    LCM

While I own and am fond of numerous other brands of drums, it took me almost 20 years to finally say "let's get a set of Classic Maples" and am I ever so glad I did. They were the sound I heard in my head all the time. LCM's are legit. I want to slowly build up a shell bank and I'll be set...

Do any drummers actually enjoy performing on e-kits?

Nice summary and one that I would concur with from my experience using them exclusively on some dates with my previous Top40/Rock/Party cover band. Dial in both the pads/modules and the FOH system to match and it sounds pretty awesome. Would I use them exclusively over an acoustic kit in a...

    Sabian HHX ride

Yup, before I relocated to GA in my Top 40/Rock cover band I used a 22" HHX Complex Medium Ride as well - really really nice. I also had in rotation 21" HHX Groove Ride and for my "let's bring out the Paiste" nights a 22" 602 Modern Essentials Ride.

    Who's attending NAMM in January?

I will be there again. Even though it was a different vibe in last year's April timeframe I had a wonderful time being amongst individuals and companies in the industry. One of my past teachers, Pat Petrillo, is playing with his band at one of the stages so I'll be definitely seeing him. Look...

    I'm Never Buying Drumheads Again

I should sign up too, I keep forgetting LOL. Also not to stir the pot / derail the topic with more political or economic thoughts but even though we're I guess "over" from the COVID-19 pandemic, the effect it had on supply chain coupled with our current [US] inflation situation, folks like...

    Quitting a gig, then returning

What a crappy experience but as someone else said you gave it a good effort and now you know your limitations with such venues/gigs. Just out of curiosity, I've owned pretty much the gamut of Roland TD-xx modules except the TD-30 but I've never heard of being locked out of changing kit or...

    HHX and AAX together?

Long time SABIAN user myself... are you stuck/committed to only using a 16" for that spot? I'd recommend an 18" HHX X-plosion crash to pair up, but you could get the 16" variant as well. Also check out the Signature Fierce Crash, AAX Vault Crash, and the newer STRATUS crashes.. the STRATUS...

    New Sabian "Stratus" line

I would agree with that. The one thing I don't agree on though is Sabian's choice to name them "STRATUS" - it kind of is a weird departure from their usual convention. If it was up to me to bless the name I would have chose something like "XSR Complex."

Did a gig on some Roland V-Drums!

I believe that kit Bo played is a Roland VAD 706. The kick drum is 22x18 not 22x20. I own the Roland TD-50X drum module and have used it live and at home; it performs very well. It is true you DO have to spend time with the trigger presets to get it to respond how you play - mine is perfectly...

Transporting the drum throne (throne bag? something better?)

I have a Roc-N-Soc saddle-style throne with their nitro gas base and I bought the Roc-N-Soc throne bag they offer. It has some padding to it and a handy front pocket for storing extra sundries. It can certainly fit other brands' thrones and bases aside from perhaps those very large DW...
