Cocky guitar player - how would you respond?

A lead guitar player in our band had made similar statements... "I'd play it like this," etc. I said in a very friendly way that anytime he wanted to noodle around on the kit he was welcome. He did and was just horrible! I mean really bad! After a few minutes he handed the sticks back making...

18 Years With a Band - And I've Moved On

Smoking? UGH! Thankfully there is no more smoking indoors in any public space here in Vermont. I have memories of playing the Saint John's Club back in the 80's and the place was a thick, smokey haze all night. I smoked back then, and it even bothered me! I forgot to mention two other...

18 Years With a Band - And I've Moved On

I don't really do the bar scene anymore. Most of it is what folks call "Critter clubs" - Moose, Elks, Eagles, and throw American Legion and VFW in there, too. Usually wrap up by either 10 or 11. Here in Vermont, there is a robust business in brew pubs. The gig is typically a late Friday...

18 Years With a Band - And I've Moved On

A somewhat melancholy take from this weekend warrior. 18 Years ago, I got a phone call on a Saturday afternoon from a friend I had not heard from in two decades. "Hey, it's Mick, do you still play the drums?" His band was booked for a large outdoor festival and their drummer was ill. I subbed...

    Post your Gig Pics

Setup finished way early at the local American legion. For me, an unusual amount of electronics next to the kit. Need to work on better power Distibution. The KAT percussion pad worked out quite well. We decided to add handclaps, finger snaps and other effects to some of our 80's cover...

    Yacht Rock

Back in the late 70's and early 80's I was a DJ at an Adult Contemporary radio station. Years later I found one of their playlsts and I realized, I was Yacht Rock, when Yach Rock wasn't cool! BTW, I love the genre... especially Sirius XMs Yacht Rock Deep Cuts channel. Let's stroll down memory...

What are you listening to right now?

The LP But Seriously, Folks has become one of my favorite LPs - every song is sooo listenable. I originally bought it as a "Cutout" LP for $2.99 I think.

What are you listening to right now?

Stumbled on this cover while looking for something else (as often happens with the internets). This 70's R&B take on Showdown is actually pretty decent. Odia Coates is better known for singing on a few (big) hits with Paul Anka, including the dreadful Having my Baby.

    Rippled bottom hihats...

We had a set of Zildjian Master Sounds (14") at my church. I am not a hard hitter (not even close) and I found those hats tended to chew up my right stick noticeably faster than my personal (14") New Beats. Once I looked down and noticed a little pile of wood dust on the floor under the hi hat...

    Kumu four piece.

((edit)) What are those dampeners? Mr. Muff.... Very groovy dampeners. Both your kit and playing are great!

    Shuffle albums to learn from?

Here's a perhaps unusual suggestion out of classic rock left field .... Uriah Heep, Live 1973. There's a bunch of rock and roll, boogie-woogie, hard rock shuffling going on there in Easy Livin', Love Machine, and Look at Yourself. Lee Kerslake was a monster player and seamlessly integrated...

    Musician's Friend Disappointment

That wouldn't be Advance Music in Burlington, VT by any chance, would it? Advance was my "Go to" until about 4 years ago. Now that it's Music and Arts it's very unremarkable. Sad.

What are you listening to right now?

Love that stuff! There are few folks who have made a "Faithful re-creation" of the legendary Boston EZ listening station WJIB (At one time one of the highest listened-to FM stations in the US). It's very enjoyable, and they play a bunch of Bert's music: https://wjibfm.wixsite.com/jibontheweb

    New band, first gig.....

Thanks for sharing the vid, sounding good. Moving is tough, I had a day-job related move that forced me to leave a band that was having decent success (for a part time gig, of course) and was quite fun. Nice to see you've landed with a group!

That is one hell of a bass guitar (Status graphite, maybe?). I've never seen level 42 live but that video is everything I'd hoped they'd sound like in concert... just amazing!
