Correcting my annoying habit of throwing sticks

I just don’t want to see a drummer who is on the already on the right track get on the wrong track by following advice that could hamstring his technique. As far as your continued insistence that “I don’t know that I’m talking about”, how about you enlighten us with some knowledge that shows us...

Correcting my annoying habit of throwing sticks

I do know a little bit about tone. If you squeeze or you are applying pressure on and off to your sticks, your tone will be constantly changing, and with enough pressure the sound of the drum could become choked. You might not notice this if you are practicing snare solos on a drum pad, but it...

Correcting my annoying habit of throwing sticks

I read your response and responded to it accordingly. In case it isn’t clear, it is my belief is that tightening your grip in any amount as a solution to dropping drumsticks is not necessary, and will most certainly do more harm than good. And I am sorry I mentioned the word stroke in a...

Correcting my annoying habit of throwing sticks

Well, the stick should not be controlled solely by your grip, it should be primarily controlled by your stroke (arm). This is particularly true for drumset players. The grip is just there to guide the stick along, if that makes any sense. If you are limiting yourself to controlling your stick...

Try sanding the varnish off the sticks at the grip point

R hand technique, downward motion=downbeats bad idea?

Bernie Dresel is a killer drummer, I saw him with the Brian Setzer Orchestra back in the 90's, and he burned it down. But yes, it is hard to figure out where he is going with all this...I mean I get bored and lose my concentration just trying to follow along! I agree with what you said on your...

R hand technique, downward motion=downbeats bad idea?

Well I am glad to hear you’re improving and it’s feeling good. Of course there is more than one way to skin a cat. But if you go back to that video of John Riley ripping that insanely fast cymbal pattern, I can assure you that what you are seeing there is 100% relaxed muscle action. If there is...

R hand technique, downward motion=downbeats bad idea?

Down tap up is also the Moeller triplet, btw. And I don't think you should be squeezing the stick. A couple problems can occur when you squeeze the stick in an accent, 1) you might introduce tension into your playing, and 2) squeezing the stick doesn't allow it to vibrate, hence you may be...

    'Too perfect' drum covers?

Yes, I get it, but what I am looking for on YouTube is a live performance, not an inference…ha ha

    'Too perfect' drum covers?

Yeah, El Estepario is the man. But if you are unfamiliar with Marco Minnemann, he is well worth checking out

    'Too perfect' drum covers?

Of course you can do both, aka Marco Minnemann

    'Too perfect' drum covers?

This is pretty weird, and I have to admit I learned something from this thread, I never would have thought of doing that! Not that there are any rules on Youtube, but it seems like cheating...ha ha

    'Too perfect' drum covers?

There are so many different ways to do it, but if you aren't using electronic drums, you need a good room to get a good drum sound...so it's harder than it looks. If you have a crappy room but a lot of time on your hands for post-production, I guess you could still make the drums sound decent...

    Poor Technique vs Surfaces

If you are talking about the donut, yes that really deadens the snare. You probably won’t be happy with the sound This isn’t a good sign. Sounds like one of those engineers that doesn’t want to hear drums naturally ring and would rather tape them all up

    Poor Technique vs Surfaces

Maybe you could try just detuning the snare side? I don’t think the bandleader would know the difference

    The science behind stick length?

I agree with you that it is a simplistic model. But it is also the most fundamental model and the foundation of all drumming. Drum playing is the art of motion. You can strip all the muscles, tendons, fat and nerves away, just look at the skeleton, and what do you have left? Levers (bones) and...
