Crashing the "1" after a fill can be a crutch for a lot of drummers, especially beginners who fall into the bad habit of over-crashing the "1" out of fear of losing it. It's the best way to kill a pocket when the band is in a deep groove. Then again, it won't make a difference to a basher...
If the "bad" musician's playing is impeding you from playing your best then you might want to pass. On the other hand, if you can focus on the good parts and play your best, it might be worth doing until something better comes up.
If the kit was purchased at a drum store, return the snare to them and have them tension and adjust it. It's going to be much easier seeing how it's done rather than working through online instructions.
