    Never breaking cymbals

    Yup.

Do you still have your first snare, drum set, or cymbal?

Yup. 1971 Olympic (Premier affordable brand) 8-lug 14" by 5 & 1/2 steel snare. Use it for my studio practice kit.

Drums sounding worse when miked up

I think this is often the case. I play out 5-6 times a month at differing venues (small bars, bigger dance halls, sometimes outside). I use the same mic set up, tuning, and IEM's with very nearly the same mix each time. I'm often struck by why my drums sound different than the gig the night...

What Is The Definitive Preference Between DW 5000, Pearl Eliminator or Tama Iron Cobra?

    1. 5000 (So good I don't have the inclination to bother trying anything else.) 2. Eliminator (on a lesson kit I play) Never played the Iron Cobra.

What affects your sense of time?

I think what you're feeling is natural & human. It's just like exercise: Some days it's just engaging, moderately easy & fun. Other days, it's a grind just to get through it. If you pay close attention, it likely will coincide with how you've slept, how you've eaten, stress or not that day...

    ‘In ear monitor’ experiments

Exactly what I do. The number one reason I love the digital mixer / IEM setup is that I never have to rely on anyone else for my monitor mix. It's fully under my control.

    ‘In ear monitor’ experiments

The other main thing about IEM's: It's not a try it once & done thing. One gig where there's some issues is not enough. It takes a while to dial it in. But once you get it worked out for you, you'll never go back.

Getting into a new band this week

Band name when you can, please. If you get down towards SD, I'll come see!

I may have let you guys talk me into making a mistake.

Both in & out, but especially when pulling them out, I turn the drum back & forth like a steering wheel from the top rim. This helps them "slide" out easier. Sometimes though, I still have to assist pulling the bag off. On the bass drum, I step on the bottom corners/edges about an inch on...

    Marco Minnemann

Saw The Aristocrats and Marco Minnemann for the first time last night and REALLY enjoyed the show. Not only are each of them AMAZING musicians, they are having a heck of a lot of fun. Just for Marco, it's worth seeing them if they play near you! https://the-aristocrats-band.com/shows/ For...

    Moving forward looking back...

I don't really pine for yesterday. But I also fondly remember it. Did I do a lot of super-cool fun things? Oh, hell yeah (music and otherwise)! But I'm doing super-cool fun things today and looking forward to the future. Life is not over until I hit the grave. I'm 63. Never been a better...

What is that drum related itch you have not scratched ?

I'm not sure my main itch will ever be fully scratched, but I'm tryin'! I seem to have this insatiable itch to get better and play with better players. It's driving me a LOT lately. I'm taking lessons from several people, constantly working on stuff I can't do well and playing out a ton. I...

I’m getting tired of the drama in music.

I hear ya. Navigating bands is certainly tricky and fraught with challenges to say the least. When you find a (mostly) good one. Stick with it. But realistically, think about it: Getting 4-6 individuals that have compatible musicianship levels, have similar time & commitment to using that...

    Most impressionable bar band.

When in Nashville, Robert's Western World to see Kelly's Heros is ALWAYS a mandatory stop.

    Most impressionable bar band.

I'm a fan. Luke McQueary is an especially amazing guitarist!
