I've got a Dunnett Titanium 6.5x14, also had a 13 but sold it as I like the 14 better. It has a unique voice that is different from other metals. A little woodier quality. Sounds great!

I've got a Sonor Vintage beech 6.5, red oyster, for sale if you want to go that route.

I think there will be a definite difference between birch and beech, and ply and steambent. Beech won't be as harsh as birch, will be a little darker, but in my experience, steam bent shells have a higher pitch. Go with T_Kauff

Thanks for the help, this forum is great. A lot here to contemplate, maybe I'll go with the SM57 to see how it sounds as it's cheap and if it doesn't work for me I can always use it for something else.

Thanks for your recommendations. When I look up the Aston Spirit, it's a condensor. Aston does make a dynamic, the Stealth, which looks interesting. I understand about the cymbal bleed, I'm trying to mic the kit as the toms seem to get lost in the mix sometimes.
