Have streaming services like Spotify changed how you listen to music?

I started subscribing to Spotify 2 years ago and I've noticed a big change in my listening habits. I'm pretty serious about "liking" and sorting music I listen to into playlists. Spotify's algorithm does a really good job of taking what I like to listen to and recommends a lot of new music that...

At what age did you start drumming?

Started taking lessons at 13 or 14 from a local high school student. But I had to practice on my mother's Tupperware for a year to prove to them I was going to stick with the instrument before they would allow actual drums in the house.

    Eddie Van Halen Dies

Man that's one of the last things I wanted to hear today. Some of my favorite memories were listening to Van Halen albums while washing cars in the garage with my dad growing up. Eddie just had a fantastic sound and real talent. He'll be missed.

    DIY Drum Shield

Thats an awesome build! What foam did you use? I've been thinking of making something similar.

What are you listening to right now?

I'm helping with the local high school's musical. So all week I've been listening to the soundtrack to Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. It's got some great tracks, but I have to try and memorize as much as possible because the written score is worse than useless.

    What's your latest purchase?

Ah, I see. Well I managed to find some keys on sale for like $7 on Drum Center of Portsmouth’s eBay store. Hoping for it to get here by the end of the week.

    What's your latest purchase?

I tried the Ebay route twice but both times I was sent either the wrong length (too long) or the wrong thread count (too fine). I also didn't necessarily want used rods. I have a full set of rods in the snare already but they are all mismatched and/or bent which make tuning a nightmare. I'd...

    Your snare formula

I have a decent selection of snares but I tend to stick with the following two: 1) Custom snare. I had Stone Custom Drums build me a 3-ply maple shell with reinforcement rings and rounded bearing edges. I then attached a set of vintage hardware off an old broken Roger's Dynasonic minus the...

What do you use for drum dampeners?

I play a small jazz kit with an 18" kick so I need all the resonance I can get. As others have said I try to either change my playing or change to a lighter stick. If I still need to tone it down my go-to item is usually gaffers tape. Doesn't leave a residue and is heavier than painters tape.

    What's your latest purchase?

Just received 3 packs of these odd sized slotted tension rods for my vintage Sonor snare. The Sweetwater parts department was extremely helpful in finding these for me. Never knew how hard it could be to find 1/4"x46mm, slotted, course-threaded rods. Now for a matching drum key...

18 inch bass drum, why bother?

Haha, bad wording. Only 4 years in undergrad but it felt like 7! Of course now I've started all over again with a Masters program so there's that.

18 inch bass drum, why bother?

It's timely that this thread should come up again. I've used an 18" bass the last 7 or so years since I started college. I was being paid to play in the pit orchestra for all the school's theater performances and needed a small kit. Now I'm playing for the local high school pit band and their...

Does the cymbal stand make a difference in the cymbal's sound?

I would imagine that lighter stands also affect the sound indirectly due to how they can affect they way the stick strikes the cymbal. I notice this with my large jazz rides on a small flat leg stand. A smaller stand will wobble and will provide some "give" when the cymbal is struck. So the...

Should I stay or should I go?

This right here should be a major red flag. A good artist should be welcoming to new ideas and collaborations. If you don't leave this band for musicality reasons, you should be thinking about leaving for reasons of not being in a hostile environment. You'll be so much better off playing with...

Annoyed by how people treat gear at music stores.

This is exactly why online sales have become so popular. I would much rather purchase equipment from the comfort and silence of my home than put up with the terrible conditions at my local GC. Of course like others have said sometimes you can get a great deal because the clerks in the drum...

    Glockenspiel "damper"?

In college we kept a large supply of hand towels in the closet for damping purposes. Roll it up tight and place it right on top. Cheap and it worked.

    It happened to me.

Thanks for the input! And I should probably clarify, even though I have a house, its less than 1000 sq ft without a basement. I can either have an office or a drum room, not both at once. Priorities I guess!

    It happened to me.

Holy crap. It's been a while and life finally happened to me. I stopped playing. I've heard countless stories of folks who stopped playing for several years for some reason or another. I naively scoffed and said to myself, "That'll never happen to me. I've been playing since I was 8...

Who here mixes different Cymbal makes?

Yep. I think it's something we all learn or accept at some point or another that mixing brands either it be cymbals or drums is the best way to get the desired sound we are each looking for. Besides that, by mixing cymbals you can create a combination of sounds that is unique to your setup.

    Shagbark Hickory

Back in the middle of my family's woods there is a beautiful tall shagbark hickory tree. Kind of a unique species of tree. Anyways, I've thought off and on about what kind of drum could come out of a tree like that. I've looked online a little but have not been able to find any drum...
