Page turns in snare drum (or percussion generally) scores

Thanks for the replies so far. I suppose I wasn’t sure how large scores spread over multiple pages would be received. If I’ve bought a score that’s six pages long, bound in an a4 book, that’s two page turns within one performance. Wouldn’t I expect the publisher to present it in a way that...

Page turns in snare drum (or percussion generally) scores

As part of my ongoing composition role, I am producing a large swathe of original snare drum pieces. Many of these pieces are multiple pages, and I am faced with the task of printing them (commercially) for distribution. As the publisher, it falls to me to decide how best to present them. One...

    What's on your "wishlist"?

Thanks. I bought my current Philhamonic aluminium snare through Thomann. Because of Brexit they no longer charge VAT which, along with customs fees, is paid to the courier at the time of delivery instead. I did the sums and it works out roughly the price as everywhere else.

For me, it's this: https://pearldrum.com/eu/products/concert/concert-snare-drums/philharmonic-solid-maple-0 7.5mm thick solid maple shell. gorgeous glossy wood finish. The tone and responsiveness of this... *Homer Simpson drool*. Just need to decide whether to get the 5" or 6.5" depth, but at...

Evans orchestral snare heads vs. Remo Diplomat Renn.

So far I am enjoying the he Evans heads a lot. I’ve got an Orchestral 200 2ml hazy reso, and a Strata 1000 hazy batter. The clarity is amazing, and the thicker 10ml ply gives much more body. As an experiment I tried a Genera Dry HD and while it was too thick a sound, I was surprised by how it...

Jazz soloing: Filling, phrasing, voicing, trading 4's 8's, vocabulary.

I massively respect MG, and think his post is worth listening to. However, I feel it’s important to stress a few points. Firstly everybody thinks about music differently. Bird (the sax player) scored his own solos note for note. Chick Corea’s first sax player at Berkeley developed a solo method...

Evans orchestral snare heads vs. Remo Diplomat Renn.

Thanks for all the replies. I use (and like) Evans heads on my kit, so I've decided to try an Evans Strata 1000 (10 mill single ply calf-skin replica) batter with an Evans Orchestral 200 clear (2 mill single play) reso. I'll report back and let you know how it sounds. I think part of my...

Evans orchestral snare heads vs. Remo Diplomat Renn.

Hmm ok, consensus seems to be that the dip heads top and bottom just aren’t cutting it for the drum they’re on. Would it be worth trying a thicker reso head first and then changing the batter, or keep the reso and try a thicker batter first? I have actually had a normal coated Ambassador on it...

Evans orchestral snare heads vs. Remo Diplomat Renn.

Well, I use the Persimmon SCS1 sticks which are quite thick, and there are some fff passages, so I give it a fair whack, but I’m not generally a big hitter.

Thanks, but no, I’ve got a diplo Renaissance clear on the reso head.

Evans orchestral snare heads vs. Remo Diplomat Renn.

Modern, crisp, dry, and powerful, yet with the sensitivity and articulation required. The Renaissance heads just sound quite boxy or papery to me. They certainly have the sensitivity and articulation, but I’m not blown away by the power. I’m performing and recording modern solo repertoire which...

Evans orchestral snare heads vs. Remo Diplomat Renn.

The industry standard for orchestral snare drum work seems to be Remo Diplomat Rennaissance heads. I've got one of these, and an Ambassador Renn. which I alternate with on my Pearl PHA 14x6.5 aluminium snare. I was wondering if anyone has any experience of the Evans offerings, namely the...
