I had a PDP double for 20 years and it was great, but I did pick up a DW7000 recently and it is a great pedal!

So I added a CS black dot on my 8" closed tom (it was on my 8" concert tom). I did not like it. The 10 and 12 inch toms with the ambassador had a nice full round sound to them and the 8" had less of that. very sharp but maybe thin and faster decay. I'll stick with the Ambassadors for now...

So I have been looking for a change. I really like the sound of some YouTube videos with black dot heads, especially Steve Smith. They seem more musical and more of a defined note / tone. In my head my ambassadors (top and bottom / clear) sound a little muddy now. Anyone else using these on...

Right now I have nothing in or on the kick drum except for the Remo Powerstroke. For a while I was leaning a pillow (!) on the reso head (outside the drum) to cut some ring down (only at home). I am thinking about cutting a strip from an old towel and running it against the had from the inside...

Thanks all good info. I am thinking there is a loose tension rod that is "hidden" at times. I play with ProMark 747 which are a bit heavy but dont consider myself a hard hitter in general.

I played a cheap CB700 set for years. Got though a ton of gigs and recording sessions (!) in HS and College. Now have a Tama. For me, must sound great with minimal tuning effort and HW must have a sturdy quality feel to it when you adjust it. And it must stay in place!

I always wonder if the beating of the toms just mess with the tension rods. I have a Tama Imperialstar. Not top of the line but when the heads are tuned it sounds awesome. I may go for emperor heads when I finally swap them out.

This may be a stupid question. I find that after a few months of hard playing my drums dont tune up all that well just by fine tuning the head tension. I find that I get the best sounding toms by removing the top and bottom head and starting from scratch (using the same heads - ambassadors top...

My first real hi hats were 505 14" heavy hats with the green logo. Picked them up used around 87 and still have them. They still sound awesome.

I have two Zildjian A rock crashes from the 80s and they still sound great and have help up well for all of these years under hard playing. Worth a look. I now find myself liking the A medium crashes since they are a bit warmer ....

I have both 10 lug and 8 lug Tama snares. As stated above the 10 lug seems much drier (it also has a heavier hoop). I find myself playing the 8 lug 80% of the time since it is more versatile and has a nice open sound, especially for live situations.

I have a stagemaster boom and standard stand. They are well made and light! much better then the heavy Tama stands I have from the 80's.

Related to a question I was going to ask. There is an article from Neal Peart about some gigs he did as a teenager. He talks about his 18" Zildjian and his 20" Zildjian and borrowing a buddy's 20" Zildjian ... but he does not differentiate between crash or ride. Was that typical in the 60's...

I have a mix of A Zildjians, 2002 10" splash and an 80's HHX Thin china. No issues they complement each other. You can mix and match brands.
