Never bothered with tabs. I was fortunate to have someone start teaching me to read actual notation from day one.
As a practical matter - tabs are so limited. Have to jump through hoops to mix 16ths and triplets.... or notate rolls or flams... Nobody uses them in any performance situations - as they are way difficult to sight-read. And more laborious to create than actual notation. Plus notation only takes about an hour longer to learn than tabs.... so no, I've never really seen their appeal.
