Why I dislike certain drum owners

I've bought a lot of gear, and am currently selling some.

I always buy the best I can get for the lowest price I can find, and I've been pretty lucky. Same with items I've resold.
I usually buy with value in mind, and the possibility of a resale is always there, so the likely price at resell is a thought, but not a concern to me.

As for modding? I'm all for it. If the gear is almost exactly what you want, and a simple mod will get it there? I've done it, and I'd do it again.
My main bass looks beat to snot, has lots of mods, and it plays and sounds great and every one who has played it has agreed. That said?
All the mods are reversible, as are almost all the mods done to my instruments. The outlier was a drastic move done by a repair tech.

tl,dr- It's just stuff, and it's yours. Make it work. If you have to sell it, do so and move on. Make what you can.

Hmmm are there Pornography forums? The "Your Place/Your Playing/Your Gear" section must be wild. I can see all kinds of parallels between this forum and a porno one in an alternate universe. I could still use GetAgrippa LOL.

That's the caveat. If I don't factor in my time, which does have value regardless of the type of time, I've made a lot of money on everything I've ever sold. Time spent making repairs or the like is time not spent playing drums, camping, spending time with family etc. therefore, it has a value that needs to be factored in to the overall equation.
If your time has no value to you whatsoever, bully for you, but I have many things to do with my time besides fix stuff and watch TV so I assign it a value.
I understand your position.

Yeah, no. You don’t wanna google your handle with “porn”. It clearly shows you get around.

That's the thing I was getting at earlier.

When you buy something, you can do it because you really want it, and it'll be fun to have and to use,
even if it's impractical and resale value might not be so good.

Or....you can buy something with the idea of how much will it be worth when I sell it,
and settle for something vanilla that doesn't really do it for you.

Of course, it doesn't have to be one extreme or the other. It's possible there might be a middle ground.
Yup, life is short and you have to live a bit too, but having been in a bad spot where even 6 months of savings wasn't enough, it's a factor I can't ignore. I will go out of the comfort box and live a bit too, but I keep those to a limit. Buying a Z4 a few years ago was one example. Huge fun, big repairs, giant loss at the end, but the smiles live on. Just can't afford to do that with everything. With my drums decision...Gretsch holds its value better than Mapex or Yamaha, but not nearly as good as DW. I split the difference when I couldn't decide which I liked best. It was the best balance between the sound I was looking for and not totally losing my shorts if I found myself being forced to sell again.

Bird and Magic.

ah ha...basketball is a sport I know nothign about...but I can see where those cards were "solid" for resale! I mainly do hockey/football/baseball

I was into hoops in the '80s and into the early '90s. Before that cardswise, nothing really. Oh, I have a couple of shoeboxes full of cards from the early to mid '70s in baseball. Never did collect football or hockey.

Not sure what the big deal is. We’re talking about mass produced drums here. It’s not like painting your Stratavarius.
I’m sure OP would find a way to convert a Strad 14” viola to a modded 4/4 violin.
😶

Another sweeping and incorrect statement/generalisation

I’m keeping my DW’s as forever instruments thanks.

Christ, this place is tedious sometimes.
I disagree that it's "incorrect".
Any time spent on here discussing DW will show most (not all) DW owners seem to buy based on a future sale, not current ownership.
I see it over and over on here.

Perspectives are strange. I've been on here 10 years and have not seen any of that.
What I've seen consistently are people taking a poke at DW, its owner, etc. and most DW drum owners on here having to act defensively.
Its bizarre, they are just drums.

Your words were incorrect though, you said

You hit it right on the head with how DW owners always talk about resale and not proud, forever ownership.
I've never understood that.

I’ve never talked about resale value, other DW owners on this thread have pointed out they are their forever instruments. “Always talk” about it.

Nope

The “Not All” you’ve since added is correct.

Might seem pernickety or trivial but try being a DW owner on here and have to wade through some of the nonsense people post about DW and DW drummers sometimes.

It’s absolutely bizarre.

Funny part is, OP owned a really nice set of DW drums and recently sold ‘em (resale, anyone?) He now talks shit about DW in nearly every thread that comes up about them, yet just bought a different DW set. Struggling to figure that logic out, since the crux of this whole discussion is singling out and dissing DW owners for only thinking about resale.

The original post was about him catching flak for modding the new DW drum set and then sweeping DW owners into a laughably generalized box, based on a reaction from some random dude on a fanboy FB page. Other members here, sensing a fresh kill I guess, jumped on that opportunity to shit on DW owners. Just because a few here can’t wrap their heads around the concept, thinking about resale when purchasing an item (any item) is perfectly valid. People do it with cars, tools, houses, blah blah blah...

OP also recently bought a older, desirable Yamaha drum set, couldn’t make the snare drum do what he wanted, and modded it. I contend that if he posted about that mod job on the Yamaha fanboy FB page, he would encounter the same sorts of responses he got on the DW fanboy page. Rinse and repeat for every other brand.

I was gonna conclude with something about not caring either way, but I guess if I took the time to write this, I do care. I’m all for talking some shit, I’d just prefer it to be equitable. Put a Pearl mount on a Gretsch set and the Gretsch freaks will lose their minds. Put a Yamaha mount on a Craviotto and the Craviotto freaks will lose their minds.

It’s no different than hotrodding a ‘66 Mustang. There will always be “original only” freaks who will faithfully and repeatedly lose their minds every time someone mods any original piece. Everyone here knows this... why have the nerve to act surprised?
