British heavy metal band Iron Maiden marked their 50th anniversary with a change behind the drum kit. Longtime collaborator Simon Dawson was officially brought in to perform as the band’s touring drummer following the absence of founding member Nicko McBrain, who continues to recover from health issues.

McBrain, who was Iron Maiden’s drummer since 1982, suffered a stroke in 2023. Although he remains part of the band, he has stepped back from touring due to physical limitations brought on by the incident. The band confirmed that Dawson would take over drumming duties for the duration of their anniversary tour, beginning with the European leg earlier this year.

Simon Dawson, who previously played with Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris in his side project British Lion, was selected for his familiarity with the band’s extended musical circle and his reputation for consistency and professionalism. The transition was made quietly, with minimal public attention prior to the first show.

Dawson’s first appearance with Iron Maiden took place during the opening concert of the tour in Budapest. Audience reaction then was mixed, with fans expressing curiosity and concern over the temporary lineup change. However, reviews from subsequent shows noted Dawson’s steady performance and respectful approach to the band’s long-established sound.

In a video message shared following the conclusion of the European dates in August, Simon Dawson thanked the fans for their support. “I can’t say how much I appreciate the support I’ve had from the fans,” he said. “It’s been incredible.” His statement was brief and humble, reflecting the understated approach he brought to the role.

Critics and fans noted that Dawson refrained from altering Iron Maiden’s recognizable style. While some commented that the drums sat lower in the live mix and others felt his performance lacked showmanship, the majority acknowledged his solid timing and ability to support the band without drawing undue attention.

Dawson’s prior work with Steve Harris is seen as a contributing factor to the seamless transition. While British Lion is a separate project musically, the working relationship between the two musicians appears to have informed Dawson’s understanding of Iron Maiden’s performance expectations.

No further changes to the lineup have been announced, and McBrain remains a formal member of the band. Iron Maiden has not provided a timeline for its full return to live performances.

The band’s 50th anniversary tour continues through late 2025, with scheduled stops across North and South America, Japan, and Australia.

Iron Maiden’s official representatives have reiterated their commitment to preserving the group’s signature sound and show experience during McBrain’s absence. For now, Simon Dawson continues to perform as the band’s live drummer.
