Default MIDI Latency...Roland TD-9 > DAW...??? (&...USB Record Problem)

hello again...

recording the MIDI Output of my Roland TD-9's into SONAR XI...using a 15' MIDI Cable...& am noticing that all of my hits are like 25-30 ticks behind the beat (@ 960 tpm).

1) I monitor the output of the song in my studio monitors.

2) I use tilt-cup phones on the digital drums, w/ 1 cup tilted off my closest ear (so as to be able to hear both signals...monitors & drums)

is this problem possible due to cable length...???

or could it be a lag in signal between daw & speakers...meaning i would play to the beat but would be automatically late due to what i'm hearing...???

(i know i'm gettin' old but i'm not that slow or innacurate yet).

thanx,

mark4man

also...attempting to record the performance on the TD-9's to a thumb drive...& the SEQUENCE comes up as a *.td9 file.

1) shouldn't that be a *.MID...???

2) how does one play or edit (or open, for that matter) a *.td9 file...???

thanx

There should be a setting for latency correction in your DAW in milliseconds, probably in your project settings.

I'd hit up the forums or support for your DAW software, or read the manual/help file..

About two years ago I did a lot of testing on this subject and I had a few other people replicate my tests.

It involved taking a microphone to a drum pad, and recording a hit and comparing the midi and audio of the hit.

My basic conclusion is modern DAW are faster than midi.

Midi is essentially a 30 year old technology. And while it is still awesome, it was never designed to keep up with where modern DAWs are. There will always be latency. It doesn't matter what your cable length, what your drum system is, the fact is DAW's process audio quicker than midi.

ok...

lynx aurora (ai) has no midi interface...m-audio midisport (mi) does not have settings...& so i went to sonar XI.

the input settings are relative to 'number of buffers' (defaulting at 64)...

& the output settings are relative to 'buffer size'...

so i split the 64 in half; & we'll see how that goes today.

thanx,

Try Reaper. I work with MIDI easily in there, plus it's free. No latency issues either.

Strictly, Reaper isn't 'free' (although it does offer a very generous demo) but it is remarkably inexpensive compared to most of the other options in the DAW market, around $60 or just short of 40 Pounds in the UK. I switched to Reaper after using Logic Pro for the last five years and I'm very impressed with its fluidity, customisation options and speed. It's a really great DAW and the integrated plug-ins are very good too.

I would recommend it very highly. I'm trained in ProTools and Logic but Reaper is definitely a very competitive choice in the modern DAW market and its price is an absolutely clinching factor. At twice the price, it would still be an absolute bargain.
