That's a hell of a collection. Once my pain meds kick in I will get up and take some pictures of some of my snares.

That's a sweet gretsch snare. I had one of their black nickel 5x14 snares... I miss it. Such a great all around snare! I also had a porkpie cherry wood that I let get away. Very cool sound, kind of like a wet sound...

LOVE THEM! I have a full kit, far and beyond the best sounding kit I have ever played on. And I have worked in drum shops before, and done some touring. So I have had the chance to play quite a few kits.
The snares are great too. I was just playing on my 14x7 Trick snare, it's so versatile. It sounds great playing Foo Fighters and it sounds great playing metal, without even having to mess with the tuning. It just falls in to place. The S hoop is really cool too. The Kodiak is a really cool snare, it's just a shame they are so hard to find!

Carbon snares are very versatile, what I love with full carbon models (I mean the ones with Carbon hoop) : they sound awesome and they very very light ! Good choice for gigs :) Crossticks are magic, better than Diecast hoops and than wood hoops as well !
They sound inbetween Birch and Maple, hard to describe but they really worth while. Ming cymbals are also very nice ! Check Carbon set sound here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6ZHf7iVmUY |

As I mentioned my post, my 8x14 Gretsch would be my keeper :)

I would probably have to keep the kodiak trick. But it would break my heart to get rid of my other snares, especially my 14x7.

Deep snares are my favorite too, especially for the 13 inch models.

Hi guys.
There is The Good Snare thread to check out as well if you like snares. It is old now and many pics are gone sadly. I have some of my snares on display in my gear thread. About 40 odd I think. I still have loads to add but who has time? Hopefully one day. There is some nice gear, old Ludwigs, Sonors etc etc. I have a pic of one that is about 113 years old but have yet to add it. My thread can be found in my signature.

I can ensure you that this 140$ Gretsch Retro Mahogany is really magic ! This snare sounds warmer than my Pearl African Mahogany, has a fantastic attack and blends perfertly with my drumsets. This is the most versatile snare I've been playing. My next buy is going to be the Drumsound Mahogany Khaya 14X6.5. This is what we consider as being the real Mahogany wood (from khaya senegalensis Senegal) ![]()

Of all of the snares I've owned, my favorite sounding one is my 1928 Slingerland solid mahogany. Well, at least for the moment. My preference changes all the time, depending on my mood and on the gig...

Interesting that a few of you name mahogany as your favourites. It is getting me thinking I should build one. I have this 100 year old mahogany bed that I bought just for that purpose.

Not in order shown
1 Pulse Piccolo 3.5 x 14 2 1972 Ludwig Acrolite 5 x 14 3 Ludwig Blackrolite 5 x 14 4 Crush black ash snare 5.5 x 14 5 Tama Metalworks 6.5 x 13 6 OCDP ash snare 7 x 13 7 OCDP black brass 7 x 13 8 Tama Metalworks 6.5 x 14 9 Crush 6.5 x 14 Aluminum snare 10 Ludwig Acrolite LTD 6.5 x 14 11 Crush acrylic 7 x 14 12 Mapex MPX maple 8 x 14 with die cast hoops 13 Ludwig Black Magic 8 x 14 14 maple 10 x 14 custom made snare with trick throw and die cast hoops 15 PDP 805 6 x 10 maple popcorn snare. Its to hard to pic a fav but since I must it has to be the 10 x 14 maple I made, just the depth and all the time I put into making it out of an old Pearl free floating snare shell. |

Thanks, I just sold the blackrolite so its not in the mix anymore, My fav is probably the one I built out of the pearl 10 x 14 maple free floating shell, (bottom bottom right). It just sounds well deep and killer, plus the satisfaction of doing it yourself is a plus as well. Now I have my eyes on a Natal Old world bronze snare, it never ends, lol.

CHOOSE THE BEST ONE! CHOOSE THE BEST ONE!
Are you a pet owner? Choose your best pet. Are you a parent? Choose your best child. Snares are all different. Some work better in some applications than in others but each has it's place. I wouldn't choose one definitively without knowing where you are going to use it.

One point of view... agree to say that all the snares are different. But I keep on saying, that we can have a favorite one.
