Default Limited Edition B/O Badge Acrolites for 2012/2013

http://ludwig-drums.com/usasnares_acrolite.php

I'm excited! I've always had a soft spot for Acro's.

I honestly think the rereleased "classic" looks better... the coated hardware looks cheap.

It was about time, really... the old one had navigation issues and stale content

To be honest, I've never found the Acro aesthetically pleasing. The combination of bow-tie lugs and unfinished shell has always left me cold.

I know they're great sounding drums, but after having owned a 400 and 402 for years, I've always thought that buying an Acro would be much like taking out the ugly chick......right up until I saw the limited editions, that is. I really love the look of the brushed chrome bow-ties. They blend so well with the shell that it's almost enough to have me reconsider my position. I sure as hell don't need another snare, but damn they do look good.

And how good is it to see Ludwig finally do something about that unworkable website. Much easier to navigate around now. Great stuff......finally!!

Pocket, I'm the total opposite on the brushed lugs. I think it looks cheap, and it leaves me cold haha!

I want a 6.5, because as a kid I wished very much that one was available....but I sure as hell don't need another snare either hahaha!!

I have the money to buy one, I'm not going to. I'd like it, but I know it'll sit (looking good) on the shelf because of the BB's.

The Ludwig site is pretty nice now.

Karl, I just got a 10 lug, 14 x 6.5 Acro, brand new a few weeks ago. It's got the chrome Bow Ties, chrome hoops, not brushed. My Supra already covers that tone pretty well, and I'd really like to swap it for a wood snare.

Got any comparable 14 x 6.5 wood snares you want to trade for the Acro?

I got the 6.5 limited and love it I like the look of the brushed hardware over chrome, I know because I have a 5" classic Acrolite with chrome lugs and hoops and to me the brushed is way better, kind of like a battleship lol.

Nice looking Limited Edition drums and good price point. Ludwig should be able to sell a lot of these which will likely turn out to be part of an unplanned upgrade path to a Black Beauty for many of the Acro owners.

At first when I saw pictures of these on the net I liked the chrome more. I went the music store to buy a superphonic and they had this in a 6.5" and I fell in love with it, it looks much better in person. I played both side by side tuned the same and while I liked both snares I like the Acro more.
But yes I agree they look much better and more elegant in person.

Not much. It's the same exact shell. Acro's have different lugs (bowties on the Acro, imperial lugs on the Supra), and no chroming on the shell. Classic Acros (not the 2012 re-issues) have only 8 lugs while all Supras have 10 lugs. So less lugs and no chrome.

I thought I read here that the insides of the Supra may be polished but not the Acro. This need to be verified though, I'm not certain of that.

It's the old-style shell. The vintage gods smile and bestow upon it otherworldly physical properties such as weightlessness... it's the perfect gigging snare....

That's pretty funny because it's exactly what I thought when we took it. I told my band (at the time; the picture is 2 or 3 years old) that it was my new alter-ego "Stefano Copeland". Anytime I wore a Santa Claus hat and those Willy Wonka shades I became him... then again even when I wear my regular glasses and go to Guitar Center I get asked if I'm related to him, etc.

I guess it comes with the territory of being a gangly white blonde dude who plays the drumset.

IMHO the bright chrome sets off the dull shell. When both are matte, it looks odd. Like the kits where everything is painted. A '70s Acrolite is pretty much the most often used snare I have these days.

My name is Eric. By moonlight I am (was) Stefano Copeland. Those days are behind me now, as while the world may need saving, the task is far too large to do without getting out from behind the band.

They are truly horrible, yes. I thought the hole spacing was different for the P-86? If not, I'm totally doing that...

Thanks, you as well! The band and photographer got quite a kick out of it too. I've seen it so many times now that it doesn't have the same effect, but it was kind of fun to look back at them all when I resurrected it for my avatar. We did all of the stereotypical band-photo "don'ts": Train tracks, brick walls, blank/menacing stares... it was all there...

Spacing is the same for P-85 and P-86. I have 86's on all my snares. No problems, been on several years (since whenever they came out).
I like the Dunnett throw as well, but they have been threatening to release them for a long time now. I kinda gave up hope on it...until I see them actually for sale that is.

Granted, P-85's are far from the most "cutting edge" in terms of design, but I've never had a problem with any of mine. It's clear the majority of people aren't at all happy with their P-85's, but to flip the coin, I've never had an issue. One P-83 and three P-85's and all still going strong.

Old, new, black, blue/olive badge, pointy badge, whatever - those snares are fantastic; what puzzles me is why the aluminium 400 is (at least in the UK) considerably more expensive. I mean, for a bit of chrome plating and a couple of extra lugs you're talking a 40% mark-up in my neck of the woods. I played a '70s (?) pointy blue/olive model a couple of weeks ago and the (original) throw-off was in perfectly good condition. The only thing I didn't like was the mechanism used to attach the snares at the fixed-end (whatever that's called): it was far too fiddly and had cross-head screws instead of drum-key screws. Though apparently this is/was common with all Ludwig snares (?).

The markup is a little ridiculous, yes. The Acrolite also used to cost considerably less, but as its reputation moved from "student drum" to "legendary working man's snare", Ludwig noticed and jacked up the price. The butt plates have ALWAYS bothered me on Ludwig snares. Their hardware isn't as bad as it used to be, but some drum-key screws on everything would be nice. With my Super Classics I literally have to pull the socket wrench out to adjust the consolette mount...

The newer P-33 butt plates have drum key adjustment. But the kicker?........the spacing holes apparently don't fit those of the older style P-32, so they can't be swapped over!!

Honestly, at times Ludwig are god's own private mystery.

And I thought DW Hardware was bad... a lot of their stuff isn't compatible with anything else (i.e, tension rods), but at least it's compatible with itself!

I wonder the same thing. Why not make the hole spacing the same and....sell a lot more P-33's.I think the logic in that would be crystal clear.

Hey Ludwig.....it's still not too late.Retool so you can offer the P-33 in both configurations.

I also agree with PFOG,I have never had a problem with a P-85,and only just within the past year, changed out the P-83/P-32 ,for an NOS P-83/P-32 on my 60's Acro, which was only starting to stick, but was still functional. No bad after 47 years.

Thats one thing I cannot understand is why has Ludwig not engineered a new throw and butt plate that will fit in the same holes as the p-85? and maybe use a drum key to adjust the snares instead of a screwdriver. All mine seem to work OK but not really worthy of a $400 snare let alone some of the more expensive ones they put these on stock.
The one that came on my Crush aluminum is awesome.

Yes, the first part at "low tuning" is awesome sounding. These are a great addition to Ludwig's snare offerings.

When I was a kid and playing my 1975 Brushed Aluminum Acro (pre-grey powder coat), I dreamed of a 6.5 version. That, and the Maple "Rock/Concert" snare were my first 2 "drool" drums.

I would put one of those Dunnett throws and butt plates on one of these drums if it were available.
When I get one, I will be putting a P-86 on it though.

Karl, you should have it by weeks end, I'm shipping it tomorrow. It's a good one too, great pop, non brushed chrome, chrome bowties.
