With all these responses, why are there only 17 participants in the poll?

I put down 2 but I do a lot of stuff for free so I am really a 1 1/2.

Somewhere between #2 and #3. We play and release music for the love of it, but we try to at least break even and avoid financial ruin doing it.

edit: Picked #2.

I play drums as my main source of income and take production and audio engineering jobs to make up the rest of it!

It seem that many are not actually responding to the poll only stating their vote in their reply. Semi-pro as well with many freebies.

I swear I has posted in this thread already.

Spent many years as a #2, some moments got me with a foot in door of being a #1.

Also spent 8 years of having a drum related day job, so, like Andy, does that mean I was a 1.5? lol.

Now a solid #3.

I play out and get paid once or twice a month, but it's not my primary income. We play because we love it and there's nothing else like the feeling of rocking a house down.

Unfortunately, I've never had any luck getting in any bands motivated enough to get to the point of gigging and getting paid. Ever. I think it's the city I live it. Musically, it seems pretty dead.

So that would put my at the hobbyist level right now. Although, I have played high profile gigs....but not in a rock band setting or behind the kit.

I need to move.

Yes, biblically speaking David is hiding his light under a bushel, although since I don't usually speak biblically that doesn't much matter ... um, yeah

Anyway - like Bill Bruford, David did his bit and decided to leave the industry for a mellower lifestyle.

I avoid gigging as much as possible too. Some people lose the intensity, some never will.

Use to be a number 2 a long, long time ago....

... still, I think I'll try to join/form a band in the UK... but I'll remain a hobbyist, I want to do it for the fun and the pleasure and if possible in a style of music I want to play, I'm not asking for much, do I ???

As stated in various threads, I gigged heavily from 1984 until about 2006. Some of those years were spent in clubs but the majority was spent playing corporate events and private parties. Unfortunately, like many places, both of those scenes have dried up where I live. As they began to shrivel the headaches doing them grew leaps and bounds. I still do get out there from time to time, just not much.

I'm sure there are some other categories that could be included. These are the only four I could think of.

1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4
1. Drumming is my full time job.

I'm a 2 and that suits me just fine. I would be happy enough being a 3 but realised early on that I neither wanted or was good enough to be a 1. Knowing your limits and limitations is a skill and a blessing.

I put myself down as semi-pro as my band have been paid a few times but in reality we're all hobbyists.

However...me and co-members of the band try to act very professionally whether paid, or unpaid.

I class myself as a hobbyist who plays in one band for the fun of it & in another band who play because they enjoy playing gigs for which we happen to get paid.

That's pretty well my take on it, though I put myself as a 3. The only reason I play any gigs at all is the others in the band harbour a similar misapprehension as most of you guys - that playing gigs these days is somehow desirable lol. Personally, I'm not rapt in the BS, hassle and erstwhile status as junior to the guy who collects the glasses. For what? To hear the music in a different space and have a mini-adulation experience? Yeeha.

I just like playing songs and jamming - and it doesn't matter where it is or who's listening. I do get more buzz from gigs but not enough to justify the messing around.

People are always waxing lyrical about the magic gigs - the high, the excitement, the lurve and so on, but they tend to gloss over the dross (including increased traffic and fuel costs, reduced parking, fewer gigs, less $$, fewer prospects). So I provide thoughts from the silent minority for the sake of balance :)

i absolutely feel where you're coming from Anon. but i'm not as averse to playing live. while i equally abhor all of the logistical and often socialogical bs that goes along with performing live, playing the rare gig is for me re-affirmation of what i do.

a tree falling in the woods does indeed make a noise. and there are often great brilliant moments in the practice room, but if no one gets to hear it, that's a shame. and if i'm not the one to deliver the word...well that's unthinkable.

Doc, as drummers I wonder how many of our relatively brilliant moments at gigs are noticed by audiences anyway, and even if they are noticed, how much are they remembered?

It was great in my teens and 20s bringing original material to the public at a time when the bar scene was buzzing. Not the same to be an old fart at a time where most venues turned into little gambling houses and most bands out there are playing covers. I'm happy to pass on the baton to Gen Next :)
