Oh, from 14 onwards, things improve, I promise. Relatively, at least.

Wait till you find out first-hand. Hah!

In other other news, I've been away for almost a week, and was welcomed back by a flying cob who shouted "MUMMMM!! I knew you wouldn't leave me!"

Today's not entirely random thought:

Soon I will be off to the sports medicine foot/ankle specialist who will inspect my cranky foot and hopefully discovers what ails it and how to cure it. I have been unable to run for the past several months and cross training is killing me mentally. Running for an hour is just so much easier than biking for an hour or just about anything else. Fortunately, there has been minimal impact on drumming from this malady. It is a weird beast. It doesn't hurt when I run, it comes on a few hours later. Curiouser and curiouser.

I hope you get good news Jim. My AMATEUR prediction is arthritis of some kind - based SOLELY on my experience with an arthritic hip and shoulder - they ache hours after I do something but rarely hurt when I am doing the activity. Unless it is reaching for my wallet and that always hurts.

Reaching for the wallet is always painful. Actually, in a way that can be a good sign.

Doc says I have probably overloaded the posterior tibialis tendon over time. The PT muscle is plenty strong but is now mechanically disadvantaged and can no longer properly stabilize my foot as it lands. All of the bones and joints appear fine. No surgery required but just as it took time to manifest itself, it will take time to heal. He advised some fairly beefy insole inserts that I should wear all of the time to calm down the PT. Hopefully, in a few months I will be able to do more although it is doubtful that I will be back to normal. At that point he wants to see me again and if insufficient progress is being made he'll order up an MRI.

He suggested inserts as a first line vs. custom orthotics because they cost a lot less (like a factor of 10) and if they work, I have a relatively inexpensive fix for the rest of my life. So I bought two different pair today, We'll see how it goes.

I reaaally wanted Doctor McCoy to walk in and wave that light-thingie over my foot and say "It's fixed now. Next time be more careful, now get outta here."

But couldn't you disassemble from a nicer target processor? I always liked the symmetry of the old Moto 68k series. In 1988 I was programming using a flat 32 bit memory model. Such nostalgia...

Today's random thought: How interesting would it be to play your kit if you swapped the positions of all the drums with all of the cymbals?

That is lovely. Reminds me of the "horsie song" from Mike Oldfield's album "Ommadawn".

"Hey and away we go
through the grass, across the snow
Big brown beastie, big brown face,
I'd rather be with you than flying through space."

(I've always called it the horsie song but I think the actual title is On Horseback. Oddly, it's not listed on the album.)

I'd never heard that one, Jim. Mind you, if I tried to take a photo through my big brown beastie's ears, I'd probably eat tarmac.

My favourite-ever horsey song is Jethro Tull's "Heavy Horses". Not only is it a bloody fantastic song, but the horse on the right of the album cover is a ringer for Joe (RIP), the best, cleverest, kindest, gentlest, most generous, most loving and most beautiful horse who ever lived.

On Horseback - Mike Oldfield, from the album Ommadawn

I like beer, and I like cheese
I like the smell of a westerly breeze
But what I like more than all of these
Is to be on horseback.

(Chorus:)
Hey and away we go
Through the grass, across the snow
Big brown beastie, big brown face
I'd rather be with you than flying through space.

I like thunder, and I like rain
And open fires, and roaring flames.
But if the thunder's in my brain,
I'd like to be on horseback.

Some like the city, some the noise
Some make chaos, and others, toys.
But if I was to have the choice,
I'd rather be on horseback.

(Chorus)

Some find it strange to be here,
On this small planet, and who knows where.
But when it's strange and full of fear,
It's nice to be on horseback.

Some are short, and others tall,
Some hit their heads against the wall.
But it doesn't really matter at all,
When you happen to be on horseback.

(Chorus)

So if you you feel a little glum,
To Hergest Ridge you should come.
In summer, winter, rain or sun,
It's good to be on horseback.
Hm!

(Chorus 2X)

I'd rather be on horseback.

This tune is very unrepresentative of the remainder of the album. The trio of Tubular Bells, Hergest Ridge and Ommadawn are highly recommended for those who like longer and more orchestral works (no drumkits but otherwise mostly common instruments, guitars, bass, organ, piano, etc.).

Jim, I raise you:

Iron-clad feather-feet pounding the dust,
An October's day, towards evening,
Sweat embossed veins standing proud to the plough,
Salt on a deep chest seasoning.
Last of the line at an honest day's toil,
Turning the deep sod under,
Flint at the fetlock, chasing the bone,
Flies at the nostrils plunder.
The Suffolk, the Clydesdale, the Percheron vie
With the Shire on his feathers floating.
Hauling soft timber into the dusk
To bed on a warm straw coating.

Heavy Horses, move the land under me.
Behind the plough gliding slipping and sliding free.
Now you're down to the few
And there's no work to do:
The tractor's on its way".
Let me find you a filly for your proud stallion seed
To keep the old line going.
And we'll stand you abreast at the back of the wood
Behind the young trees growing.
To hide you from eyes that mock at your girth,
And your eighteen hands at the shoulder.
And one day when the oil barons have all dripped dry
And the nights are seen to draw colder
They'll beg for your strength, your gentle power
Your noble grace and your bearing.
And you'll strain once again to the sound of the gulls
In the wake of the deep plough, sharing.

Standing like tanks on the brow of the hill
Up into the cold wind facing
In stiff battle harness, chained to the world
Against the low sun racing.
Bring me a wheel of oaken wood
A rein of polished leather
A Heavy Horse and a tumbling sky
Brewing heavy weather.

Bring a song for the evening
Clean brass to flash the dawn
Across these acres glistening
Like dew on a carpet lawn.
In these dark towns folk lie sleeping
As the heavy horses thunder by
To wake the dying city
With the living horseman's cry.
At once the old hands quicken,
Bring pick and wisp and curry comb,
Thrill to the sound of all
The heavy horses coming home.

All horses are brown. Except for the bits that are green. And the bits of Charlie that aren't green or brown are going blue.

And yes, you are :D

Today's random thought:

Very often musicians will inidicate that they carefully and continuously practice their instrument so that they will have the skill to "say something" with it. I think that's a lovely sentiment. My question is, how many of us "say something" other than "Look at me!"?

Being players of a particularly loud instrument, this is sort of hard to do unless you live in a cave. Even if all you are saying is "please don't listen to me, I suck", people will still hear you. They may not be staring at you, but I guarantee they still have some sort of opinion running through their head. You don't hear drums and not notice they are there.

I met a left handed gentleman and aspiring guitar player last night. He said more than once that no matter what guitar he ended up with, he was buying a right handed guitar and stringing it up-side-down so he could "play like Jimi Hendrix".

Each time he said that, his next question was "what's so funny?"

For years now I've been hearing about competition, stuff like "competition breeds success" and "competition winnows out failure" and "competition proves who/what is best". It seems to be a perverse application of just one part of evolutionary theory. I especially hear this coupled with discussion of a free-market economy. Only the strong survive competition. We need competition between manufacturers. Producers need to compete for consumer dollars. Recently it's even been extended to competition in the public sphere, e.g., competition between schools as a sure fire way of improving them. It seems that competition is being sold to us as a panacea, the best and only way to improve things. Competition, competition, competition!

But then I compare that to my experience with music. I don't see much of the c-word. Instead, I see entirely different c-words: cooperate and collaborate. Do we compete with bass players? Maybe some of us do but I think collaborate is more typical. Do we compete with other drummers? Maybe for a specific job/gig, but I think in general we tend to cooperate with other drummers more often than not. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think any of us see ourselves as better drummers if we withhold information from other drummers or even send newbies down blind alleys in order to stymie their growth and improvement.

Isn't this forum a prime example of the success of the cooperation and collaboration model versus strict competition? Do we not all improve if we all work with each other instead of competing against each other?

I don't know exactly how we could transform our current economic/political system into one based on these other c-words but I think we need to try.

My random thought? When is my luck finally going to change... In the last week:
I am being incorrectly charged £505 by the debt recovery agency. Despite sending off all the proof needed to absolve me they are taking there sweet time and they arent holding the case so because of there lazyness i might have baliffs on my door for something I never did.

I am out of a job because i was on a 0 hour contract that left me bankrupt due to lack of work.

I found out my eyesight is rapidly regressing and so I will be wearing glasses most of the time starting next week.

The best present I can get myself this month is a new snare head i saved for all month.

My paraplegic mother has gotten worse and I am finding more and more of my time is being spent looking after her.

My fiance has had to go back to Netherlands to finish off studying.

I just feel really hated right now :/

Stagger I am with you man and extend all sympathy and empathy - really sorry about your mama. I have been going through hell at home and work is a drag. The ONLY thing I look forward to is playing drums and I have a thumb injury that won't let me play much now, and hanging out here and I recently posted a total dbag post that rightfully pissed off/turned off several members here whom I am fond of. The only thing that keeps me going sometimes is forcing myself to find 3 things to be grateful for. I know it sounds cheesy but it kind of works. Sometimes it is as basic as:

I have shelter
I have food
I have thoughts

Hang in there

MM

Thanks mike, its good to just get things off my chest once in a while and this is the only forum that really gives a sense of community. I am thankful for what I have, very much so, which gives me all the more fear that I could lose it. The horrible part is that I have irrational paranoia, and recently came off the sertraline and then this hits and im set into regular panic attacks over it. Even with my mum saying worst case scenario she would pay it i still irrationally panic over it, with no reason to as it would all be sorted. Worst part is I know its irrational, I know i shouldnt panic over it but i do and then i end up making myself ill over it and eugh... its just a downward spiral all the time. I just jumped on my kit today and despite being a very quiet drummer, grabbed a pair of ahead maxim sticks and pounded it. Gets a lot out....back to blues saturday

Stagger maybe ping BacteriumFendYoke privately - I am pretty sure he is a trained mental health professional and has offered to help me before with anxiety issues. Hope I am not offending BFY here...

I actually got to meet the legend! Insanely jealous of his guru snare and friendship with Andy too!

Glass is not a true "solid" but is considered an "amorphouse solid". In condensed matter physics, an amorphous solid is a solid that lacks the long-range order characteristic of a crystal.

Did not know that.

It must be a royal pain leading them out to pasture.

Out to pasture is easy - when they're hungry they're quite quick on their feet...err...foot.

When they've been eating all day though, getting them back into the stable is slow going.
