Random thought for the day (apologies for the non-sequitur):

I just found a video of me playing a gig about 4 years ago. The Internet is a wonderful thing.

No way am I going to link it but it's so bizarre. I had no idea it had been recorded.

Duncan, this is a form of abuse I'll have you know. You can't tantalize us and not deliver, where's your national pride? How would you like it if I did that to you?

Regarding grains of sand, although big rocks do eventually crumble into sand, at any given instant there are a finite number of sand grains on planet Earth. A big number to be sure but it has been estimated that there are more stars in the universe than there are grains of sand on all of Earth's beaches combined.

What I find more striking is that there are more molecules of water in a cup of water than there are cups of water in your favorite ocean. That's an awful lot of some extremely small things.

More fun with math. Consider the number .999999... (an infinity of nines after the decimal point). Is this number almost as large as one, exactly equal to one or ever so slightly larger than one?

The answer after a word from our sponsor....

Pi is not infinite although its decimal expansion has an infinite number of digits.

Good point, but, if the decimals expand without an end, randomly no less, how then can it not be infinite? Because it will never go past number three?

Pi has always fascinated me. If you think about it, we only really need three digits: 1, 2 & 3.

Then there is binary code...0 & 1

( i need to go smoke one )

We only need binary digits. We choose ten in the West but other cultures chose different bases. Some Mesoamerican cultures used a base-20 system. Time in the West is technically a base-60 system which was also used by the Sumerians nearly 5,000 years ago.

I should get my brother on here... he'd know more about this than me.

The length of pi is infinite, but the value of pi is 3-point-something.

People are such cheap asses. I have an AR-15 with accessories for sale for $500. That is an excellent price for a fully functional, well taken care of, accurate rifle. People keep trying to trade me their crappy .22's. My lower receiver cost more than their whole gun. Cheap asses I tell ya, cheap asses.

Yeah, and people still are trying to low ball me. I hate to sell it but life gets in the way sometimes and I need the $$$. Its all good though, I will get another.

It is a shame NYers can't own one. I understand why, but it is still a shame.

But that doesn't stop people from doing so anyway. It's not like there are border checks between the states or other avenues to obtain them. I must admit that as an adult I don't quite understand the allure of them. I mean drums are too loud as it is, I can't imagine that hobby.

Speaking of pi, because it is a non-terminating and non-patterned set of all digits, you should be able to find your birth date in there somewhere.

There is something very magical about shouldering a small, contained explosion that allows you to repeatedly put a small piece of lead exactly where you want it over and over and over. I find it very relaxing.

I'm going with equal to 1 on the basis that 1 - 0.999' = 0.[infinite number of zeroes and then 1] (i.e. 0)

And if 1 - something = 0, then that something must be 1.

How'd I do?

There are multiple ways to prove this (.999... exactly equals 1). One way is a decimal expansion. For example, we take a fraction like 1/3 and go through a sequence like "Move the decimal point and 3 goes into 10 3 times with 1 left over. Move the decimal point again and again you have 3 goes into 10 3 times with 1 left over", leading to .333.... exactly equal to 1/3. You can do a similar expansion on 1/1. "1 goes into 10 9 times with 1 left over, move the decimal and repeat", resulting in .999...

What I like better is noting that .333... is exactly equal to 1/3. If you multiply .333... by 3 you get .999... and since 3 times 1/3 is exactly 1 then .999... must also be exactly 1.

Today's random thought: The only marsupial native to North America is the opossum.

Not being a mathematician I don't know how to notate it but .999 to what ever number of decimal points is always going to be shy .1 to the same number of decimal points of 1. I'm sure you don't want me to pay you .999 of your paycheck monthly. So it is almost as large as 1.

Here is the problem with .999 I have a basketball, it is 1. If I remove .001% of the basketball, it no longer holds air and now is equal to 0, as it is useless.

Math is fun and can be used to manipulate just about anything as you need it to. As someone who is trained as a designer, I can say without a doubt that .999 does not always equal 1. A machine part that has a size of .999" and fits into another part with an opening of 1.001" will fail if either part is machined to exactly 1". We need those differences in size to allow the parts to work as needed. .999 is not the same as 1.

Yes I know you can do a proof and make it work, but you can also do a proof and find that all women are evil. Again, this is not always the case.

1.000000000
- .999999999
-------------------
.000000001
If there is a difference, in my book it can't be the same. Old math, new math whatever.
Like I said I will see that from now on you get .999 of your pay.
50,000 pounds per year x .999 =49,950 pounds. I'll keep the 50 pounds

Every time you add a 9 I will add a 0 and the difference will be the exponent of the number of 9's and that is .1

Mathematical proofs are absolute, at least at this basic level. .999 is one thing. .999 recurring is a vastly, vastly different thing to .999. They're not the same number in any sense.

Do you deny that three thirds make 1? Well, three thirds make 0.999 recurring, which is the same thing as 1, otherwise you couldn't divide anything by anything.

.99999 is not 1, neither is .99999999999999999999999.

But .999... (that is, an infinite sequence of 9s, note the trailing ellipsis) is 1. Period. It's not approximate, it's not some form of mathematical chicanery, it's not a parlor trick. It's a fact, like "the earth orbits the sun".

And if I add an infinite number of 9s then you won't get to add a 0. Look at it this way, every time we add a 9, the differential gets smaller. If we add an infinite number of 9s then the differential is infinitely small, in other words, there is no differential.
