I'm looking to have a new sound in my snare and i was thinking something like this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_zRDchkDXg I have a Ddrum Maple snare 13 x 7 http://www.google.com.do/imgres?q=dd...:13,s:17,i:166 Also besides telling me what head to buy, could you guys tell me some tips to tune it that way. Thanks. |

Steve Jordan likes extreme snare tunings. Any coated head should work, pre-mufled would help, and just tune it maybe one turn above JAW, same on bottom, and tape a wallet to it, haha. You can still hear it ring/resonate. Don't expect a 13" snare to make that sound with out some extreme tunings. Also look at the way he's hitting it. Dead center, pushing through the drum to get a full sound. Try using the butt of your stick.
http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=93546 - same question here. Looks like Bo and I agree 100%, and I was going to recommend the extra head trick, but it's quiet and you can't really rimshot.

Steve Jordan does like extreme tunings. The snare he uses here is the 14x7 Elvin sig snare and its practically JAW like jodgey pointed out. But Steve likes to keeps his sig snare heads almost choked. He uses lots of creative muffling too. Seas of duct tape, felt strips, tissue, tape/tissue that imitate felt strips... Really interesting stuff.

That's probably what I would do. Heads dent easier tuned low, so a thick two-ply should last a while and give a deep sound; the 300 is a great weight head.

We gave you that recommendation you can get the sound you want, not because of archetypes set by drum head manufacturers.
